update:
rma'ed video card. installed new ati 9800 pro (cat 5.9) (cleaned out old drivers with driver cleaner pro). still getting vpu recovery error / reboots /lockups.
this one caught my secondary to the price.

i have had a compaq presario 910us for 3 plus years. it has developed some issues that have hindered its mobility (short battery life, move it too much and it reboots) so i would like to replace it.

a friend has mentioned that one can expect issues when matching an ati video card with a nvidia motherboard like i currently have (and having issues with). opinions?
reset bios. no improvement. hangs/crashes seem to be happening faster now in game.
ran memtest 84 for 3 cycles with both sticks ram = no errors.
any other thoughts.....i hate to buy another video card and that not be the issue (have found one tho =) looking at 6600 GT).

dont need to take a step back...thats for sure. a quick price check puts the 6800gt /x800xl /9800 pro all about the same (within 50 dollars anyway). will investigate the 6800 gt and x800 a little bit more and see what comes of my 9800 pro. thx for the quick replies.
assuming sticks were not exact match...how would that affect system stability when each stick was used separately?
will give bios settings a try....off hand i dont remember changing any of them.
