With the RealtekR1000_1-1.8.kext.zip, I did install it there for sure. I don't recall what I did prior to this version. I think originally I didn't realize that the R1000 was what I needed so I was mucking with something else entirely. So maybe the 1.04 version would have worked.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I think mine came with 1.5 and I upgraded to 1.7 as there was an article on the MSI Wind by the Uselessninjas that recommended going to it. I might try going back to 1.5.
