What temps are you seeing at a 30% increase? How is the fan noise? Can you overclock?

It's hard to say it's not safe with the stock HSF because that is how AMD ships them, after all. However I did not like the idea of my card idling at around 80c. Avoid the Zalman. It was very disappointing, especially after how many excellent products Zalman has created in the past.

I just got a 4870 and it runs HOT. 80c idle. I bought and installed a Zalman GV1000. It cools nicely - 45c idle with fan at full speed which is loud. 50c idle with fan at slowest speed but the fan noise is still annoyingly noticeable - louder that the stock cooler with the 65% higher fan...

Found the problem. It was not the boot.ini fix. My 10/100 Linksys switch does not like the 10/100/1000 NIC built into this Gigabyte board. I am now using a Belkin switch and problem solved.

Just changed my boot.ini per instructions from OP. No disconnects so far. Fingers crossed!!!!!

You don't want to enable auto insert notification or autoplay or any of the above if you have a cd burner. Doing so can cause problems. More info. So the question remains: how do we get the drives in "My Computer" to refresh their titles when a new CD/DVD is inserted? F5 does not work.

I am running Spybot S&D & also Panda Titanium 2004 with no problems. Both run updates & scans fine. At what point did it lock up during the check for updates? Right after you clicked "check for updates" ? I am trying to duplicate your problem.
