No check engine light? Check for the trouble codes. Weird exhaust smells could be bad catalytic converter. Also check your spark plugs, they can tell you alot depending on the color/patterns on them.

Lexus IS300 is a very fun car to drive, tight suspension, RWD, nice I6 and Toyota reliability. I have also driven bmw e46 sedans, and G35 sedans and I think the IS300 was the most fun to drive. Its just a little smaller. At about the $10k for earlier models... Definitley my next car.

WD40 and a rag might work, I used that on a bicycle before, paint seemed fine after.

Muffler shop and $100 should do you good. Or find a used OEM one in the junkyard/craigslist/honda-tech.com for $25-$50, it will be bolt on and look nicer.

Have you considered the Scion XB? they are pretty roomy, get 28mpg highway, and fall in your price range.

My friend just got the 2010 Camry SE model and its pretty nice, not so "Camry-ish". The first camry I actually like ever.

Assuming that all your special files are in the same directory, you could just tar them up and write them to a location that will get backed up. Add that tar command to the crontab a few minutes before the rsync job will run.
