    Stops powering on

I solved the issue, it was a short, I had thrown in a shorter 6-pin PSU connector to molex since I was only using one of the connectors over a short distance, but I just noticed that that 6-pin connector had a wire doubled back on itself. Idk where I got it from but it was shorting the PSU...

    Stops powering on

Thanks! Can I try that with it still in the case, just unhooked from everything? I'm hesitant to think the PSU is the problem, because it worked fine before and I don't see how I could have damaged it. I'm trying to figure out what could have changed as a result of me installing the...

    Stops powering on

Hi All, So I just built a new HTPC (details in sig). I got it running with just the boot SSD about a week ago, just installed Win7 and drivers then set it aside for the week til I could get to it again. It ran fine then, booted multiple times, I played with it a little here and there. I...

    Silverstone NT01-E - *don't buy* (unless aware)

On mATX boards the Silverstone NT01-E blocks the first expansion slot. If you are looking for an H67 mATX board, all such currently commercially available boards have the PCIe 2.0 x16 slot in the first position, so the NT01-E precludes using a VGA card. Silverstone makes no mention of this...

can we post things for sale on this forum?

Sorry, I read the rules but I didn't see this covered. I'm trying to sell my Antec P193 case locally (greater Boston area), and this is my favorite review site around, so I figured that this is a community that might have interested people. Are we allowed to post things for personal sale...

Will future games be more or less CPU limited

Right now it depends a lot on the game, note how much the CPU effects Dragon Age: Origins framerate versus say Starcraft II or Crysis:Warhead, which have only a 10-15% spread in performance comparing current to 3 year old CPUs. Has anyone seen inclings of which way the current trends are...

    Building a new server

Thanks Blain! Unfortunately we're looking for a target of 12TB of disk space, so I'm pretty stuck on 2TB drives (although newegg has a sale right now on 3TB drives, so I may pick 4 of those up instead).

    Building a new server

So as a bit of a test I tried a new homebuilt model, an Asus H67 board that actually has 6 SATA connections (incl. 2xSATA2), an i3-2100, stock cooler, 2x2GB DDR3, either Antec 300 or Lian Li PC-K7B if I wanna spend $30 more, as cheap as I can get reliable PSU (sticking to ocz, antec, and...

    Building a new server

Thanks! My budget is $2000. It looks like NAS is the way to go as long as I can find one (it seems like synology is the most highly recommended) that is cheap enough to make it worth it over building. On that note, Synology has cheaper 4-bay options...

    Building a new server

thanks. Is there a particular NAS brand or spec you would recommend? They vary widely in price. I don't have a lot of faith in netgear, and Cisco's systems are super expensive. There's a lot of brands like synology, qnap, and buffalo that I've never heard of. Seagate might be OK though, I've...

    Building a new server

Thanks for the advice! I used to build gaming rigs as a job on the side, so that's where my mind's at, and hence why I'm new to thinking about a server. I figured that I would have cheaper options looking at servers, but frankly I couldn't find any chipset that gave me more SATA ports at...

    Building a new server

Hi All, I'm building a new server for my (small small) company, we just need it for communal data storage and access, so HDD capacity is my primary concern. I just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone has any suggestions: SB: Intel Core i5-2500K - $224.99 ASUS P8P67 (REV 3.0)...

    Toshiba R385 Impressions/Review?

Yep sorry mistyped, the R835-P56 or the i3 version. The specs look great, just like an updated R700, still 3.2lbs with a 13.3" screen but now with SandyBridge mobile processors, sounds like a good thing. I'm just curious to see exactly how much they changed, for the better or the worse...

    Toshiba R385 Impressions/Review?

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone has any opinions yet on Toshiba's new R800 series. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Lenovos upcoming X220 and whatever Asus ends up offering in the 14" SandyBridge category. Plus if admins are listening, +1 vote for a full review...

Asus U35-X1 versus Toshiba Portege R705-P35

Hi all, I'm having a tough time deciding between two notebooks. I'm looking for something light, portable, sufficiently powerful for productivity tasks (including web browsing, MS Office Suite, Mathematica/Matlab/Maple, AntiVirus applications, FTP clients, etc., but there's no gaming...
