Answered my own question: I just went back to Windows Update, installed .NET Framework 1.1 (without uninstalling 2.0), then manually started the CCC runtime and now I get past the CCC splash screen and into the app. :)
One thing that's odd though--and this has been true even before I...
I'm having the same issues with Catalyst 5.13 CCC where it just brings up the black splash screen and freezes--and I'm on Win XP 32-bit (and a clean install at that!). I went straight to .NET 2.0 via Windows Update.... How do I get .NET 1.1 on my system now? Do I need to uninstall .NET 2.0...
Excellent advice which I severely wish I could follow but my crappy Dell Dimension 8250 is maxed out at 1.5 GB of RDRAM.
Naturally, I bought this PC two years ago before I discovered anandtech and similar sites and enlightened myself (however slightly) to much better options.

Yeah, servers are clearly a whole nother can of worms.
But for single-use desktop PC's, it seems fine to just let Windows do its thing. Fine and maybe even best.

Er, at least it did until I read Smilin's post above.
Seems my initial conclusions are best (let Windows handle it, period) unless someone can offer hard evidence (real world performance figures) to the contrary.

Seems to be a never-ending battle between the static- vs. dynamic-sized page file groups. I've always used a static-sized page file, but the arguments to just let Windows handle it do make sense to me.
A more compelling argument can be made with regard to location; it does make sense to...
I've been wrestling with intermittent freeze-ups (hard disk light solidly lit, sometimes followed by various STOP BSODs, typically F4 or 7A) that have been exceedingly difficult to troubleshoot given their very random and infrequent occurrences and lack of any logged errors anywhere (and...
Yep, how well I know... I've read through many of those threads, found them to be entertaining at first, then exhausting. I find it highly ironic that after so much research I've come to the conclusion that the best approach to such an apparently controversial subject is to do nothing at...
OK, so folks used to advise putting the Windows paging file on a different drive (and even better if the drive is off a different controller) than the OS, BUT now it turns out that doesn't make all that much difference performance-wise and most folks advise just leaving it on the OS partition...
Why not?
I'm a digital photograher / videographer and so require a LOT of storage space. Over the years, I've accumulated ten external hard drives. Add these to the three internals I have in the case, plus the various partitions I've already got, plus a couple of mapped network drives, a...
The solution was to restore the C: partition again using True Image, this time selecting just the C: partition rather than the entire disk. When doing it this way, True Image gives the option to select the destination partition size and I simply dragged and dropped the right edge of the...
I've just swapped a 200 GB Win XP boot drive (C: system drive) for a 300 GB one. I used Acronis True Image to create a copy of the C: drive, then restored it to the new 300 GB drive. All worked fine: I am able to boot off the new C: drive, but True Image created the same partition size as the...
Yep, tell me about it. I bought this PC two years ago not knowing any better. I'm a much wiser man now.
I can't quite justify/afford a new desktop yet. But I'm really looking forward to when I can, and it will certainly be home built rather than a Dell box.
Live and learn,
Dan
