Doesn't hurt to have a backup PSU. After reading (MaxPC) a review/labtest of the modular PSU units aren't as tough as the temp rises. I would get PC Power & Cooling at the high end or Antec to save a buck.
You should un-overclock (?) while troubleshooting/diagnosing.
Run memtest86...
Hmmmm.
Latest BIOS?
IRQ conflicts?
Forceware 81.98 drivers?
Driver Cleaner assisted uninstall?
OS?
Power issue? Can you test all PSU rails and report back voltages?
Can you run at spec'd clockspeeds/timings for testing?
It's either hardware or software related.
Hardware:
Specs of the keyboard and mouse (vendor/model). Any fans or any other electrical devices around? What kind of monitor? Try keyboard and mouse on atleast 2 other PC's not just one.
Software:
Reinstall the software with the latest...
Tomorrow I'll check if I can get my Knoppix can mount my USB Zip 250. Rebate's advice is good. Buy an external USB 2.0 enclosure so that you can connect a CD/DVD burner, 3.5" IDE hard drive or 2.5" hard drive. Since it's in a laptop you can't use EaseUs Disk Copy 1.0. SpinRite will cost you...
Ya, get a post beep code or video code. Try replacing the 3V CR2032 CMOS battery with another, they are cheap and available at Safeway, Walgreens, RiteAid, etc. Let us know.
But it was only for 32 bit Windows? Am I to assume that you are NOT running the typical 32bit version of Windows XP?

SR would be what you claim if it were consistant and reliable and THAT is my ultimate point. I only referenced blackviper for an additional source of how to turn SR off. I work at the PC repair bench all day long and more often than not SR fails! So what you gonna say to THAT?! huh?!
The problem could ALWAYS be power, just so you know. You wouldn't know that until you test for it and power issues CAN affect RAM. I just wanted to confirm your PSU was delivering the necessary amount of power and my suggestion was a follow up in case something easier didn't work (like...
Not sure what safe temps for chipset are. Their resilience is varied I'm sure.
You should definately get some compressed air to dust or system against dust, heat and static build up. Meaure the chipset fan width by length and I'll see if I have a replacement.

Just a couple of reasons I don't use system restore. If system restore were more consistantly reliable or ran pre Windows then...
OK. I have seen this intermittently before.
Check your jumper settings on all 4 of these drives even if you think you know. Only mount and connect the Primary Master hard drive on master jumper settings to the IDE controller using an EIDE (80wire/40pin) cable. Then report back after...
