I'm looking for a 775 motherboard that fits my needs, but there is so much choice out there and I get so far researching a model before realizing it it doesn't do something I need or just over my budget (under £75 if poss - i'm in the UK).
I'm sure the knowledgeable folks in here can help me...
Thanks for those suggestions. The target system is really just a file server so I'm interested in the lowest power consumption and I have to be sure WOL is going to work, though I do still co-ax digital out and a reasonable graphics performace as I use it for everyday stuff too.
Will have to...
My K8NGM2-FID died yesterday. The board is now removed from the case, nothing plugged in except power & CPU. When trying to power on the fans spin briefly and then stop, then I have to power off and back on the PSU to try again.
Tried BIOS reset, different PSU, different CPU, various memory...
Sorry, to clarify I do know how to use WOL I just can't get it to work with this motherboard. I am waking other PCs on the same subnet just fine using a command line utility that sends the magic packet.
Have you got WOL to work properly with your K8NGM2-FID?
yes i thought about trying that but the only safe way would be to remove the permissions even for the SYSTEM entry, which obviously I can't do as it would affect my normal XP installation. I assuming that its easily possible for installation programs and malware to run as SYSTEM which would...
VMware isn't free and doesn't allow me to try the types of software I want (games for one).
Navid, your suggestion sounds a little too complicated. As well as hiding partitions each time I'd also have to make the OS I wanted to boot the active partition.
Surely there must be some freeware...
I've recently setup my system to dual boot with a second Windows XP installation as a sandbox to try out new or untrusted software safely.
When I boot into my sandbox XP installation however, my regular XP OS is still visible to the system as the C drive.
Is there any simple way I can...
Great thread. I've not seen much talk of Wake on LAN though, is that because it works fine for everyone?
I can't get it to work at all and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I've enabled the BIOS option, and the three "Wake on" options in the device advanced...
I've tested both PSUs with a voltmeter. The Antec has +5VSB at 5.03V wheras the older PSU that works has it at 4.95V. Can the MSI really be that sensitive that 5.03V is too high for it?
Not much else I can do apart from try more PSUs...
Just to clarify the motherboard won't even send the power on signal to the Antec PSU. Having read up on the ATX power standard a bit more, the only supply to the motherboard before powerup is via +5VSB pin (the normal rails shouldn't be active yet and the motherboard can't know whether these are...
Made some progress - I tried an ancient ATX power supply I had spare and to my surprise I could power up. So there must be something about my Antec Truepower 2.0 that the MSI doesn't like. I know that the Antec works fine with my old motherboard and is much more modern and powerful than the old...
Can anyone help me with this board?
I just installed it into my rig but it won't power up. As soon as I turn on the PSU, I the power LED flashes steady on for 2 seconds then off for 2 seconds, but I can't power up the PSU using the motherboard power switch, no fans spinning nothing.
All I...
