VAIO PCG-SR5K - Won't start-up......

I was hoping anybody technically savvy in this area might be able to diagnose the following problem with this ultraportable Sony Vaio PCG-SR5K. The battery does not retain power and at start up "assistant check processes" goes on then reboots. Any ideas?
