You've said that before, but I don't think it's true. There's no reason they can't use one motherboard for all three systems and just have different population options. Leave the memory off, maybe put on a 0-ohm configuration resistor to tell the BIOS/firmware that it's not populated...
It won't be just plain RAM, as the memory contents would disappear as soon as power is lost. It'll be some form of non-volatile memory, such as NAND Flash.
How would you verify that anyways? The Arcade units came with a 256meg memory card regardless, so either way they have 256meg of memory...
