Subject says it all - I was wondering if there would be any (even theoretical) slowdown using PCI SATA cards; in that train of thought, even using PCI IDE cards.
Assume a fairly recent board - Say an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe with built-in SATA. I hope I don't come off as lazy, I just have a pretty...
My major problem has been the nforce IDE controller drivers. They're a POS as far as I'm concerned. Went from a MSI Ultra (K2 I think?) to an Epox 8RDA+, no other changes. With the drivers installed, the IDE channels won't support DMA. Without the drivers, it supports DMA, but EAC hangs on...
Interesting. You did way more research on that subject than I ever would have done :)
If I had something critical I wanted to keep backed up in real-time, I'd get a MB with RAID or a Promise controller and mirror drives. Otherwise, I'd just use a fancy backup script / task scheduler combo...
IPC$ is basically (And forgive my non-technical definition here) a line to your PC - it's used for browsing shares and such. Just like if you use explorer to browse your hard drive, IPC$ is used to browse networks (It does other stuff as well) You can think of it basically in the same thought...
It would help greatly if you could try pinging each step from the bottom up and telling us the results.
Example:
For this, we'll say the internet router is router A, and the internal router is router B. Can a machine plugged into B ping B's address? (Which I'm assuming is its gateway)
If YES...
My apologies, I meant to say it's not the best *data* performer out there. The drive I have is ultra-quiet - as a matter of fact, the only thing I can hear in my firewall is actually the CPU fan. I was wondering if there was a better performer out there that was also a quiet drive.
Thanks for...
I'm in the process of needing to build an ultra-quiet PC. I've had experience with Antec's True Power and Temp Sensing Fans, and like them for their low noise output. I'm still not 100% sold on a processor fan yet, but have one that will do until a better one comes along. (Cooler Master, FYI)...
Wow - thanks for all the warm welcomes!
I'm a long-time lurker - I have pretty much built my last 2 PC's using advice soley from this site, so it's sorta an honor, in a geeky sort of way, to join the Team :)
