building cheap, compatible boxes for home lab

I work for a major repair computer retail chain and we have contracts with some local companies for PC repair. In my personal opinion, you are limiting yourself by sticking with an Intel chipset. You can get a SiS735 board (i.e. K7S5A) with integrated LAN for around 60 bucks online. Pair that...

Can Microsoft track down Illegal copy of XP ?

Piracy funding terrorism? Isn't the point of pirating software to save money and not give it to anybody else? The only way for this to be valid if is all software pirates are terrorists themselves and saving money for themselves. I'm not condoning piracy, but use a little common sense, would ya?

    440BX upgrade advice needed

Currently my father has an Intel SE440BX-2 mainboard with a Slot 1 Pentium III 500 MHz and I was thinking of buying a Celeron 800-1000 MHz in a Socket 370 version and mounting it in the board with a Slocket-type converter. Since the Celeron recently made the switch from a 66 MHz to a 100 MHz...

How do I toggle which programs startup in WinXP?

I dunno if you've tried this, but... Goto Start -> Run and type "msconfig". This neat little program lets you choose which programs load at startup, as well as which WinXP services load on startup as well. Hope that works.

    Cable service going nuts!!!

I have AT&T Broadband in Denver, Colorado. It seems AT&T is having quite a few DNS problems, at least on their servers in my areas. Also, the downstream speed slows noticably from the promised 1.5 Mbps to around 128 Kbps during peak usage times (early evening). When I'm on early in the...

Why did my I.P. address change from "24.xx.xx.xx" to "66.xx.xx.xx"

Your cable modem is set up for DHCP, which means that the server can assign any IP which it has the rights to. I am one of those unfortunately souls who was with Excite@Home and is now with AT&T Broadband, and my IP went from 24.4.229.174 to a constantly changing one. One reason for this is...
