NTFS Encryption after *removing* the account password

So if this is the case, why does Windows XP warn you that removing a password will cause previously encrypted files to become inaccessible? I have had Windows warn me of this once back when I was playing around with encryption after reading something about it during a ceritification study. I...

NTFS Encryption after *removing* the account password

Well, "workaround" was probably a bad word. Removing your password, which is what my brother did (and was warned by the system about doing) is what locked him out of his files. When your entire user folder in Documents & Settings is encrypted, it makes for a f'd system. I wasn't sure at the...

NTFS Encryption after *removing* the account password

Well, it looks like if the password is removed, which causes the files to be locked, they can definitely be restored by putting the same password back on the account. At least I know that little workaround, although I would be surprised if it happened to me again. hehe

NTFS Encryption after *removing* the account password

I just got a call from my brother about his encrypted files on his computer. The files were encrypted via WinXP's native encryption. He said he was getting annoyed with the User password on his account, so he went to the control panel applet and removed the user password. Well, this also...

    Bluetooth - ARGH!

I'll try the uninstall / reinstall routine. It seems that's an acceptable way of fixing problems these days. :sigh:

    Login ID vs File Sharing

Glad I'm not the only one to think that User Account management is strange. I guess I was naive to just assume that when you renamed an account, that the entire thing renamed. Apparently just the "alias" of the account changes? The only way that I noticed this quirk was, when in Computer...

    Login ID vs File Sharing

I have a three-computer network. Shortly after setting up the newest computer, I decided to change the name of the first user installed on that machine. (From Jimmy to Jim.) All three computers each have the same two users (with identical passwords...Jim and Shawn). I recently found that the...

    Bluetooth - ARGH!

After round three of trying a Bluetooth product, I'm really not feeling any love for this technology. It is so f'ing convoluted. It's seriously NOT plug and play. From the endless amount of "profiles" (or are they logical ports, services, configurations or just whatever anyone wants to call...

    Strange network permissions behavior

I have a network set up in my home that consists of three computers. Two are wired to a WRT54G router, and one is wirelessly connected with a WPA-PSK. All machines are WinXP Pro based and have Simple File Sharing turned off. Each system has a user account set up for the two of us that use...

Am I ahead of the curve, or are manufacturers not smelling the coffee?

I was just realizing that, although notebook sales are forecasted to take over as the most popular form factor for new systems, we still can't build them. We can build all sizes and forms of computers, except notebooks. Are the manufacturers not realizing that if there were standard notebook...

Bluetooth Mice - What's the normal behavior?

Did the two reconnect for you if the mouse was ever turned off and back on if the computer was still on? Say, to change batteries or something. The Targus mouse is probably going to go back to the store, which is no big deal. I'm still just trying to make sure that I understand the...

Bluetooth Mice - What's the normal behavior?

I know that Bluetooth items are supposed to see each other when in range and function without much user intervention. My notebook has Bluetooth installed and seems to be odd in the way I thought Bluetooth would work with a notebook mouse. Here's what happens: Computer already up and running...

WPA-PSK TKIP on a PSP is not working. Grr?

Yay! I'm not the only one! haha I saw that the PSP now had a Power Saving mode for the wireless antenna, but I left it On. It appears to do the same thing as the switch on the left side of the PSP, just through software. My PSP will go in circles when trying to connect. Attempting to...

WPA-PSK TKIP on a PSP is not working. Grr?

Yeah, I have the new firmware. That's the only way I could have added the TKIP entry. ;) It's just a great mystery as to why only the PSP, with the same key as the other wireless devices, won't connect. If I turn off encryption, it will work just fine. I didn't really want to try a...

WPA-PSK TKIP on a PSP is not working. Grr?

I just entered my WPA-PSK into a PSP for the third time. This is a long key with lots of funky characters, etc. This key works fine on notebooks. The PSP works fine without encryption. The router has the MAC address of the PSP allowed. The problem is that when the PSP tries to access the...
