Thanks for responding. Believe it or not, Bernard, I had just stumbled onto that very page before I saw your link. It is great resource so anyone wanting to calibrate brightness and contrast should check it out!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. I tried it and it made my Soyo look terribly washed out. Pretty much unusable. What works for one monitor is usually not what will work for another. Here is a good site for tweaking your brightness and contrast: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/#contrast

I keep trying various settings on my new LCD monitor and I think it looks best with contrast cranked way up, because this makes the black portions of the picture look darker by comparison ... I guess I want to know if doing so might somehow shorten the life of my LCD or hurt it in some way...

Are you talking about the shortcut to My Documents? I went to the actual folder, under my c: drive to confirm that the folders were all empty. In terms of backups, if I had backups, don't you think I would have tried reinstalling them by now?
