The wierd thing is that my desktop is in another room and usually I'm using the laptop from the living room with no walls in between it and the router. And I still can't get good speed out of it.

I have a 802.11g wireless network setup using D-Link's newest gear (I don't know the model numbers). I bought all 802.11g gear and have access to my cable modem using both my desktop and my laptop. On my desktop which uses a PCI wireless card I can get in excess of 1000Kb/sec download speeds...
