    maths coprocessor's

hello all, and thanks for all the replies. My original post was not very accurately presented, I did of course mean FPU not coprocessor as in the 486 SX system! But I am now sure from your replies that I have four FPUs in my trusty old Q 6600 powered computer. Thanks again for your input. ...

    DOS problem with XP SP1

The two little util's probably set the hardware directly which XP (or any nt based OS) does not allow. Perhaps some programmer will happen by this and tell you how it might be done.

    Smoke from my scanner! Fixable?

Well as a resistor costs only pence, then it's worth trying a swap to see if it will ever scan again!

Already why isn't my new computer working!!

yes you can start the power supply by just shorting the pins together momentarily with a screwdriver for instance. But from what you say the power supply is switching on as the fans are spinning. If the hard drives are not spinning and the CDs do not operate then I would check their...

    fdisk? Format?

you do not need to fdisk or format the hard drive before running the XP installation CD, you can set up and format the partitions during installation. I would suspect that you have hardware problems, you could try testing the memory with memtest86 and the hard drive with the manufacturers...

Regarding your video lead problem, perhaps you could trace the pin out using a multimeter in continuity testing mode?

    Weird Keyboard Problem

Have you tried a different keyboard? My guess would be that one row of the keyboard matrix is faulty causing the row of keys to fail.

    Lost Multi Boot

I've never done this so I well could be wrong here. You could go to command prompt and run the utility called bootcfg.I think that bootcfg /query brings up a list of available operating systems but whether it actually searches for them on the hard drive is another thing.

Looking for basic software firewall that only runs one process and takes the least system resources

Mmm .. I thought an outgoing check was a good idea until I visited http://www.firewallleaktester.com/leaktest1.htm They mostly blew straight through Kerio 2.15 as if it wasn't there, I now just rely on my router firewall plus XP standard firewall (well it doesn't do any harm at least).
