All software firewalls are a waste of money. If you have XP use the built in one, and if you really need a firewall, by a hardware firewall. The general public doesnt need to worry themselves with firewalls though, I doubt you have anything that is worth taking the to hack into your system...

Nothing like that has happend to me yet (knock on wood :D) , but given the info you posted, i would have tried to get your boyfriend (since its your car) to stay at the desk with the "jackass" and run to an ATM and make a quick with draw. Beyond that, I dont know.
