Thank you for your helpful replies!
woops, yes I meant to write i5. I realize it's not much of an upgrade from Q6600 but I'm not really losing money in this deal either so I figure why not. The mobo that I'm selling isn't compatible with i5 yet the mobo I'm buying is a better value.
And yes...
I'm selling my current computer's guts and using that money plus a little of my own to buy better parts.
I've actually been very satisfied with my current set up and would not have considered upgrading at this point if not for this particular opportunity to sell it all and get upgrades with...
Thank you for pointing out that other hard drive...That's a great find.
I'm making 1-2 gigs of RAM on each machine a first priority based on what everyone has said. Then, if I have the luxury, will address the hard drives.
I'm lost here:
I found that that the Compaq D530 has the 865G Chipset.
From what I've read, it looks like this chipset does support SATA.
Yet, the computer comes with a DMA/ATA-100 (Ultra) drive, instead of SATA, originally.

Hi folks,
Thank you for all of your posts.
It turns out that we have been shamefully using Symantec AV 5.0. Dear god. We have copies of Symantec Endpoint on the way now (for the life of me I couldn't get them to drop Symantec, Fayd).
Following everyone's advice, I went ahead and...
I can't remember what version of Symantec we use but I'm sure it's pretty old and the people above me are already in the process of ordering new versions.
I would love nothing more than to reformat and start fresh. Bobross, I am going to pitch what you wrote to my boss and see what pans out...
Thanks all for your advice. I will continue to push for a different antivirus.
Does everyone agree that buying new hard drives would help? I'm putting together a pitch.
Thanks Dave,
Restoring the machines with a fresh XP is a great idea. Unfortunately, I don't control this part of it, I can only make suggestions.
The plan is to create an image of all needed software installed on the machine (I would assume via Daemon tools or the like). They say that the...
Thanks for the advice!
I couldn't agree more about the antivirus and that was one of the first moves I tried to make. Unfortunately, the people above me refuse to budge on this and insist on keeping Symantec, which is why I tried the next best thing (making registry changes).
There were 2...
Really? My understanding was that the P4 was primarily holding us down. I've heard people say that there is a marked difference between that and a Dual Core. These are just things that I've heard though.
Hi folks,
I am a teacher for a nonprofit organization in the USA. Unfortunately, I am also our point person for serving IT needs. I am horribly unqualified so I'll try to explain this the best way I can.
I teach English as a secondary language in a computer lab with the aid of very basic...
Hey Rally, I don't know how I missed it but after reading your post I double checked and the Centurion 590 sold me. I appreciate your help on this, it's a lot more attractive and I like the space / air flow.
Regarding the Q6600, I've tried to work that sucker in my list instead of the Phenom...
I went Phenom because I'm hardcore penny-pinching. Newegg has a sweet combo right now with Phenom and G-skill RAM that I couldn't turn down.
I couldnt agree more with something simple and clean. I think all the LED lights and flashy looks have gotten gaudy now days and I've been looking for...
