Does anyone just build for fun?

I built my parents a PC a few years ago, but last year I built them a new one and left the old one at their house to collect dust. I rediscovered it two weeks ago and the lightbulb went off that I could have some fun with it! Athlon 64 X2 3200+ 2x1GB DDR2 MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3)...

    Budget Gaming PC ~$1200

    1) I'd take a 7950/7970 instead. You could probably make an argument that the 670 is a tiny bit faster, but I think 79xx overclocks better and you also get the Reloaded deal with free games. 2) I don't see much benefit of the Rosewell Fortress line over the Capstone line? The latter is Gold...

    Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Well, I got another new score. This one jumped over 1000pts by simply raising the Catalyst "Power Control Settings" from 0 to 20%. 9157 - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6288348 Makes me annoyed what other things I'm missing...

    Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Wow...you know what I just tried? Changing the "Display Scaling Mode" in 3DMark from Centered to Stretched. Result? 1500pt jump. 8042 - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6287180 I don't know if that's high enough, but I can't explain how that setting alters the score.

    Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

This was a fresh install of Windows and everything else, including 13.1 Beta 3 drivers whereas before I was using 13.1 official. I've run several tests and scores are pretty consistent. Beside Steam and GPU-Z (which I've tried on and off with no difference), Microsoft Security Essentials is...

OK I reinstalled Win7 x64 the other day and my score is now around 6480 - still WAY below what I've seen from a setup like this. Someone please help!

    2500k temps 15% higher after 2 years

Case is dust-free but what about the heatsink? I'd remove it, blow all the dust out, reapply the thermal compound and reseat it. It that doesn't help, maybe try updating BIOS to a newer version?

    Radeon HD 7950 Owner's Thread

Replaced a 5850 with a 7950. Noticed a significant improvement in framerates in every game, but something about 3DMark11 is very wrong: 6155 - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6123872 The CPU is actually 40x100 but 3DM reads the idle speed. Otherwise, it's accurate. I'm seeing scores with...

    Gtx 480 or 6950 1GB

Last year I had this: Core2 E6400 @ 3.2GHz nV 7950GX2 I upgraded to a 5850 and the improvement in BC2 was pleasant, but not what I hoped. In late January, when TigerDirect had their i5 2500/2600 sale, I jumped on it. I was SHOCKED how much of an improvement it made. I had assumed the...
