There is no NEED. But it's nice to be proactive and forward looking. It's reasonable to assume that agp 8x and serial ata will become at least somewhat useful by the end of the lifecycle for the current cpu's available. Anyway, I've got a preorder for a 648 ... will just have to wait. Oh...
