    still looking for advice

What are you using it for? If you want to do LIGHT gaming and are going to skip a video card (for now?) and just use the onboard graphics, go with a 790GX chipset that's paired with 128 MB of sideport memory - I *think* BIOSTAR adds $10 to the price and calls it the BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX...

What else is governing max memory supported?

Hmm...now I feel a bit like I'm back at my original post...though as Foxery pointed out "4GB sticks are currently rare{75below0 - and disgustingly cost prohibitive!}; some manufacturers simply didn't test them, so they don't certify/guarantee them." Maybe if I go point out to the mobo...

What else is governing max memory supported?

Gee, you didn't even ask what kind of use it would be seeing. 3 years for me, 3 years for the kid (who obviously won't be playing the latest FPS at max settings), then off to the non-profit it goes. I assure you all parties will be happy with their user experience. "Hopelessly obselete" is a bit...

What else is governing max memory supported?

LOL, it's for a build with an expected longevity of 6+ years. I believe that in ~4 years it will not only be desirable but affordable to quadruple my ram from 4GB to 16GB. THANKS TO ALL FOR THE INPUT!

What else is governing max memory supported?

Given the same CPU, motherboard chipset and # of DIMM slots, what accounts for differences in maximum memory supported by the mobo? Wanting to buy an X48, but can only find max memory = 8 GB To get to (Intel) max memory = 16 GB, have to find a SB = ICH10(R), currently only available with a...

    amd 790gx hybrid crossfireX questions

Not sure you'd get much out of hybrid crossfire with 3870 + onboard IGP, as the 3870 is already much more powerful. Note that 790gx mobos might be similar to 780g mobos in that the manufacturers might offer two flavors "with sideport memory" and without, eg. Gigabyte...

Use Mobo to skip OS and go straight to Net

I thought I read a while back (Anandtech?) that a mobo manufacturer (ASUS?) was working on something that would allow users to go straight to the Net without loading their OS...haven't been able to dig it up...anyone have a clue?

    AMD LE 1640 disappears

So this week I was going to order the components for my budget HTPC, which WAS to include an AMD LE 1640...only to discover that it has vaporized from the web from one week to the next, including the AMD website. I guess it's not that big a deal to drop down to the LE 1620, but if I had known...

    CoreTemp

Anandtech just reviewed the Freezer Pro 7. The author notes "In comparing results, please keep in mind the test results from the new cooling bed using CoreTemp are not directly comparable to earlier cooling results." Guess he put that in b/c the Ultima 90 now reads +7C hotter under load than...
