Windows Sonic for Headphones is a built-in feature in Windows 10 (1709) and above that allows you to experience the audio in your favorite movies and songs in a virtual 3D environment. This is happens due to the 7.1 virtual surround sound option that automatically gets enabled along with Windows Sonic.

Turning on Windows Sonic for Headphones in Windows 10 is merely a matter of a couple of mouse clicks, and here’s how it can be done:

Step 1
Get to the Sound box

Type PLAYBACK in the Cortana search box and press Enter (or click Sound from the Best match list). This opens the Sound box with the Playback tab selected by default. The Sound box has different tabs that allow you to configure the audio settings of your Windows 10 computer.

Step 2
Open the speaker’s properties box

Select your default speaker (preferably your stereo headphones) from the playback devices’ list, and click Properties from the bottom of the tab. This opens the Speaker Properties box. From here you can configure the audio settings for the speaker you selected.

Step 3
Enable Windows Sonic

Go to the Spatial sound tab, select Windows Sonic for Headphones from the Spatial sound format drop-down list, ensure that the Turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound box is checked, and click OK. This enables Windows Sonic on your Windows 10 computer. Once done, you can now enjoy the surround sound audio effects using your headphones, without having to upgrade your speaker system or sound card.

Note: Another, quick way to enable Windows Sonic on your Windows 10 computer is by right-clicking the Speaker icon from the notification area, going to Spatial sound (Off), and clicking Windows Sonic for Headphones from the submenu. However, this approach gives you less control over the options you can enable or disable while enabling the feature.

Note: After enabling Windows Sonic, you can also click Dolby Access from the Spatial sound submenu and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the trial version of Dolby Access from Microsoft Store in order to enjoy various sound effects offered by Dolby Atoms.
