Nice basic LED projector for cheap:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824025104

* 300-lumen LED projector with 100,000:1 contrast ratio (30k-hour bulb life)
* Native 16:9 720p resolution (most 720p LED projectors aren't actually 720p native)
* 2.5-hour battery built-in (say 2 hours for a buffer, enough for one full movie)
* HDMI port
* USB port (can drive a Chromecast or other TV stick)
* TV tuner (including support for OTA tuners like this one for $7)
* 33 milliseconds input lag time
* 20" to 100" screen size

Some people use small flexible tripods like the Gorillapod as stands:

I use this $15 mount for mounting to the ceiling:

If you'd like to use the projector during the day, there's a DIY daytime screen paint here:

If you're looking for a surround-sound system, Monoprice has a nice 5.1 set. Discussion here:

How would this work for simple presentations mirroring a laptop display?

Pretty good, although the lumens are low, so you'd need a fairly dark room. I actually use a lot more 720p projectors than 1080p projectors for presentations because the native resolution makes text more readable for older people with aging eyes, or people with vision problems, so as long as you can flip off the lights, this would be a great little projector.
