Default What is the mark-up on a TV sold at Best Buy?

Hello,

I'm in the market for a new TV and I have a friend who works at Best Buy. Employees of Best Buy can buy anything Best Buy sells for cost + 10%.

My only question, of course, is what is Best Buy's cost for a TV?

The lowest end TV I'd consider purchasing is a 27-inch (non-flat) with component input, but I'm also considering a 32 incher or a flat-screen 27 inch (hell, maybe even a 27 inch HDTV).

Thank you.

Have you friend look. There is a way to get into the Bestbuy computer system and check employee prices of products by using their SKU.

When I worked there (years ago) you had to have a manager lookup the employee cost.

It varies greatly on the model and size of TV.

Most TV's have a 20-40% markup. Smaller ones are usually more like 20%, big ones (think $10,000 TVs) are more like 40%. It all depends on the TV though.

I thought BB employees could get stuff for cost + 5%?

It can be done if you know the 4 letter code to access the employee pricing system. With the new registers all you have to do is scan an item and it will give you the employee price.

Not only is his friend breaking the employee purchasing policy, he is making money on the deal.

Nice. I always remember that being such a huge hassle. I wanted the price and the manager always made me feel like a jerk for asking for a second of their time.

Not only is he breaking policy, but would be fired for it if caught. Its not a four digit code, its six. Each employee has their own six digit employee number they clock in and out with, look up prices in the system.

In the old system with the monochrome monitors the employee pricing screen is accessed by a 4 letter code which then asks for an employee ID (6 digits).

Termination for breaking the employee purchase policy, who would have thought. :disgust:

You'll usually get around 20% off whatever the retail price is selling for.

Iwould know. I worked there, and bought 2 TV's (one for friend, one for parents). Bought a 27" nonflat, and a 27" flat 3-in-1.

I could give a sh1t less that I'm "breaking policy" when the managers do it every time. I hated that place and I quit. I did my job and did it well.

Majority of the BBs now have color monitor where they only need to input their employee number. I wasn't trying to be rude in my post if thats how it came off. Also the system keeps track of everything the employee buys. So if he has bought 5 TVs in the last month he may get fired just for that.

My local Best Buy is so desperate for help that they make the security guy at the front door hand out job applications to the patrons coming into the store.

It of course depends on the TV but it should be anywhere from 15-30% off. You are of course putting your friends job in jeopardy as every employee purchase is logged into the store's system and if they are ever caught doing this they are gone.

If they didn't do that what would stop you from buying the cheap TV's and selling them to freinds or people you meet IN THE STORE:Q

Walmart has the same policy as do most retail outlets.

Gotta love employee discounts...especially when your friends have 'em. How do you think I got my xbox?
