Default Did Florence Griffith-Joyner run clean?

Her untimely death and performance progression still fan the flames of doubt in the minds of many. What is your opinion?

Here's the Seoul 100m women final:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPRqUVkQyIQ

A Wikipedia article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Griffith_Joyner

Quote:
Some suggested that her times could only be the result of using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs, mainly in that she was rather old for a sprinter (she was 28 years old in 1988), that her physique changed dramatically in 1988, showing marked gains in muscle mass and definition, and her performance improved dramatically over a short period of time. Before the 1988 season, Griffith Joyner's best 100 meter time was 10.96 seconds ? not even in the then best 40 marks of all time. In 1988 she improved that by 0.47 seconds, a time that no one has approached since. Similarly, her pre-1988 best at 200 meters was 21.96, a mark not in the top 20 runs on the all-time list. In 1988 she improved that by 0.67 seconds, another time which has not been approached. Griffith-Joyner attributed the change in her physique to new health programs.[3]

Her retirement from competitive track and field after her 1988 Olympic Games triumph further fueled the controversy as mandatory random drug testing was about to be implemented in 1989.

IMO she was more than likely using steroids.

I tend towards this line of thought also.

These days it'd be quicker to make a list of who isn't using drugs than who is.

Sad but true.

At least they, roids users, all have their stories straight when they get caught. I was told/though it was flaxseed oil...

That's the thing with the men's 100m in '88 as well with Ben Johnson. He easily won that race, then got stripped of the gold for using steroids. Years later he said something like: "Yeah, I used steroids for that race, but then again so did everyone else. I was the only one caught."

The 1988 100m men's final is considered the 'dirtiest' race ever by some.

I think she was juiced. I think most in Track and Field at the Olympic level do. If it was not for the Juice, the < 10 Second 100 Meter mark would still seem like an impossible benchmark.

I laugh when ever people bring up professional athletes and drugs. You would be hard pressed to find any athlete from any sport except golf maybe where at one point or time they didn't take some questionable supplement or drug to improve their performance. Back in the the early days stimulants were used and steroids became drugs of use since the 40's and 50's. They have all done it. As a matter of fact some the greatest players in many respective sports used some type of drugs. Hell Mike Schimdt, probably the best 3rd baseman of all time used stimulants. But back then they weren't banned and also back then there was no testing. The pounding professional athletes take is beyond what is normal. It is stupid of people to think they don't need the help of science to help them. Steroids are not going to take a nobody and make them Barry Bonds. They haven't made a drug like that yet. And when they do parents will feed it to their children like candy.

I think when the truth comes out about golf that's going to surprise a lot of people too. Supposedly beta blockers have been very popular in the upper levels of golf for a long time.

How the heck do beta blockers help your golf performance? On the other hand, anyone notice that Tiger Woods looks freaking buff?

Wow, I can't believe you brought that up. I thought I was the only one that remembered that race. I remember noticing him (Ben Johnson) at the starting line and saying to myself "man, that guy is huge! No way does he have a shot at winning the race. He's too heavy." Then he proceeded to pwn the fastest man in the world (Carl Lewis). I remember it like it was yesterday. Ben was rumored to be doing reps on squats with 600lbs. Crazy! I don't know many weight lifters (personally) that could do 600lbs reps on squats, let alone a sprinter.

Take the worst performer in any performance sport and feed him Masteron, Deca and maybe something more exotic such as Parabolan and you'll build yourself a performer beyond what any man can do without that, of course he will have to train hard, that is what the steroids do, they allow you to train more often and harder.

I don't really care or know anything about baseball though so your ramblings regarding that which i suppose was to fool the reader that you knew anything about steroids, are not things i am going to spend time arguing about.
