Default Microsoft Word wants to Install something EVERYTIME i start it...

Whenever i load Microsoft Word 2002 (running on XP) it brings up a 'Preparing to Install' window... Then it wants me to insert my 'Microsoft Works Suite 2002 disc 1'... The problem is, im in Holland for the semester and didnt bring that cd with me...

The name of the file its looking for is 'WORDRET.MSI'

Any idea what it does?

and how can i fix this without the cd?

I've had this problem too on practically every computer at university.

Anyone know anything about this?

It's very annoying.

It also happens when I want to do a search on the computer...

Beginning w/ Office 2000, MS Office had an "install from CD on first use" feature that you could enable for optional functionality in the suite. So let's say you select that option for the grammar checker; the first time you try to use the grammar checker, Office would ask for the appropriate install CD.

Why it's being triggered now on program load is one of those mysterious problems endemic to Windows software. If you don't have the CD, you'd probably have to be a guru intimately familiar w/ Office deployment/internals to hack up a solution. Searching the MSKB is probably not gonna help because it's hard as heck to find useful information through their search; it's commonly known that Google searches microsoft.com better than they do.

Personally, the basic concept is a lousy idea anyway. Most people do not leave their installation CD conveniently nearby after setup. The Office suite is so feature-complete that MS has to come up with brain-dead features such as this to pitch upgrades.

Well that blows.... I cant even open a file by double clicking, the only way for me to open one up is to load the program seperately and then load the file. PITA if ya ask me.

Anyone else?

Yeah, sort of what "manly" was saying, when you run the installation for the first time. You have the option of doing "Run all from my computer, or install on first time, or run from cd", some options like that. The idea is you are "customizing" your install of the product on your system. And like he said, not many people keep the cd's with them at all times. I usually just do the "Run all from my computer" which puts ALL of WORD on my system. Granted, it's bloated, and adds a lot of extra "features" that you dont' need, but after a while you learn to disable them. It's much less of a hassle in my opinion to do it this way.

And that file it's looking for "WORDRET.MSI", stands for some sort of Microsoft Install Program itself, not a particular file (Like a .dll or something.) So your NOT gonna have someone send you a file or two to fix this.

If you could give us more info., like what kind of file are you trying to open (Just a .doc document)? Maybe there is something else out there that can open it. Does it contain graphics, charts, or something else besides just .Rtf properties? Maybe we can tackle it that way.
