on dirt and similar surfaces it's not too bad..assuming you don't ram into anything..but if you do it regulary on cement your tires will grow bald as a cue ball pretty quickly.

it is my understanding that drifting does most of its damage on the tires and not the car. when you're drifting on an asphalt track, the tires start to heat up and eventually begin to melt.

It's only bad for your tires and your image. Makes your tires bald and makes you look like a riceboy.

Depending on the car, sometimes alot, sometimes a little. Axels, ball joints, struts, and tires all take wear when you drift your car.

Keep in mind that rally cars are designed for that type of driving. Drifting has limited uses and rally racing is one of them.

it also depends on the kind of car you have and the surface you're attempting to drift on...
low/medium speed fwd drift usually will flatspot your rear tires if you do it enough and on soft enough tires... it doesn't last long and it's overall fairly stupid
awd and rwd drift just produce more tire wear and some extra wear on your diffs especially on surfaces with more grip. A lot of people I know enjoy taking their cars out in an open parking lot with snow to get the car sideways.

high-speed drift... that's just unnerving... I'm just learning car control still (winding down my 1st autoX season) and I know how to recover but for someone with no experience in a possible spin situation...

In Japan drifting is really a sport that requires that you don't give a crap about damaging your car. Rallying probably also means you don't mind rocks, gravel, and grit messing up your car pretty bad. Even rallyX is still pretty taxing on exposed components too...

If you really want to see some impressive drifts, find some old videos of Vic Elford (sp?) running rallies in his factory sponsored 911. His technique actually had the rear of the car overtaking the front quite a bit.

dude, my car is sooo bad at handling due to its soft supsension, I can literally drift by turnning my steering wheel all the way at 20mph.... it works better if I yanked the hand brake so the car will fish tail.
