ok, now, anybody remember the movie Hackers from the mid 90s. All i want to know, is does such a thing as a clear laptop exist. If you recall the film, the main character is given a completely clear laptop. Thought itd be cool to try and find one. Anybody?

Thanks

Clear laptops, virtual reality file systems, large peices of plexiglass with embedded LED's that are supposed to be servers, these are a few of my favorite ludicrous things. It's a movie, and not a very good one, so it was probably a prop.

yes, i understand that it was merely a movie. However my question was not in regards to the movie. It was simply in respect to the existance of a clear laptop. Did i ask you whether or not this movie was approved by you? No. I asked if a clear laptop existed. It may be possible that the laptop in the movie was indeed a prop yet a fully functional one. But this is the real world, and my question remains, does a clear laptop exist.

Thanks a lot

exactly, the previous guy just had to mention that he thought it was a poor movie. Construvtive vaule of that was Nill. Indeed a clear laptop would be quite impressive.

I think the reason there are no laptop/ cases that are clear is the metal is neccessary for shielding, but I could be wrong

Nope, unlike clear telephones, the bad news is that notebook makers donot make clear notebooks. Don't know why, but it's certainly worth looking into... BTW if you are interested, I saw a kid's portable computer made by Brother I think it was, at Walmart and that was clear.

So if any of you notebook manufacturers out there are reading this thread, make note, people like clear electronic things..

Peace..

the closest thing to a clear laptop would be those apple things. but they aren't really clear.

even if they were clear, it's not like it'd be pretty. it's not like you can see the pcb and the cpu and all the chips. if u've ever seen a laptop opened up, it's all covered up.

Actually, I had a very valid point. I pointed out that the majority of the things you see in that movie dont exist, I outlined 3, maybe I should have dumbed it down so you got the point that all 3 dont exist. And if I want to throw in my opinion of those fantasy items, I will.

A clear laptop would indeed be a very cool item. Don't know why no one ever asked about it until now.

To make it clear, they would have to use plastic or glass, glass would be too heavy and structurally not as sound as metal. Plastic is the same... to make it structurally resistant to stress, they would have to have a thick piece of plastic or glass when a thin piece of metal would suffice. In addition, another reason might be the conductive properties of the material. Manufacturers probably use the metal to conduct heat out of the notebook, which probably wouldn't be as efficient with plastic or glass.

The Ibooks do have the clear like plastic, but it still makes use of a metal frame underneath it. Are there any notebooks out there that are just one piece of metal? What I mean is the 'clean look' a lot of them come in multiple parts, it would be cool to have a notebook made out of one piece of titanium casing with only openings for the screen, a hinge and the keyboard. Would look very slick.

ok guilty, once again, i dont really care that the movie used props. Sure virtual reality files systems do not exist, and sure it was about a bunch of kids rollerblading in new york, etc. All i questioned was the existance of a REAL clear laptop. Also, the idea that you would have to dumb down your point is assinine. I understand what you are saying completely in your first post. All that I am saying is i dont care what you say. You have no worth to me, and your opinion has no bearing on what i think.

yes. perhaps what i find most interesting about that guy's negative (and by negative i mean non-constructive) comments is that the clear laptop does indeed exist. if one were to have actually watched the movie astutely, he would notice that the clear laptop is fully functional. supposing it weren't, the magicians of screen effects would have had to superimpose all the wonderous OS schtank onto the fake screen of the fake laptop. that would have been a bitch, no? i find it hard to believe that a multi-million dollar budgeted movie featuring characters like "cereal", "zero-cool" and "the plague" could not have requisitioned a clear laptop case. i mean, come on, i once walked into a compusa and said, "hi, my name is acid burn" and the just gave me a complete new computer system. it was rad.

in conclusion, i would like to point out that i personally own a "gibson". i can actually walk around in it and see little electrons. ZOOOM, i think i just saw a notepad file fly by. hopefully it wasn't a hacker, i'll just go fly around and check for it.

oh, i want one. It would be much cooler if the PCB was that cool blue stuff you see every now and then. That would be sweet. I bet you could do it.

Personally I think Apples titanium notebook case is alot cooler than a clear case. A clear case would make it look too much like a toy.

At least with the clear cases you can tell if some nasty persons boogies, spooge, food, roaches, fingernails are lurking inside. :disgust:

Thats all you questioned, fine, I answered the question and I answered it correctly. Five or six other people agreed with me in a one way or another. Maybe you didnt request my opinion of the movie but the question made me think of it from a few years back and how amusing it is to me now. Thats really regardless though, you made a big deal out of 3 words as if I went out of my way to insult you.

And Saltparrot, the question was about the reallity of clear laptops in the market, read the rest of the posts and you will see people compare the idea to real laptops that you can buy, not to the past existance of a singular theoretical prop. Plus, your assumption that because you can see the screen in motion prooves nothing, they could have easily pre-recorded a sequence and just displayed it onto an LCD via a hidden wire or hidden playback device in the case with no actual input from the actor.

I beleive you both mistook my comments on a movie that is amusing to anyone who knows a decent amount about computers as some kind of offensive to cain's query about the existance of the item. I didnt mean it that way, and theres no need to flame me for it.
