I will have one close to the official release day I just cant get it yet. I would want one if I was a consumer who had to buy one. I was expecting it to be more hype than anything, I must say it has very fast response to input and very good resolution on the LCD it is very crisp and vivid. Not worth the $500-$600 IMHO maybe half that.

No 3G, GSM/EDGE only expect around 80-200kbps on edge speeds

That's definitely going to be a major weak point!

This phone looks amazing except for the lack of 3G, did you notice if they phone had an Xpress mail client on it?

its also odd that ppl report no ichat client on it. but then you can't use data and voice at the same time on EDGE. I would certainly get it if it had 3G, but until then my blackjack is the one

I didnt even think to look for any email I was to busy being show it can play movies. I didnt get to play with it much the menu looks like the pics on the web I dont remember seeing an Email icon. Im sure they will come out with a 3g version in about 8-12months. I hope to spend more one on one time tomorrow.
See if you can list what programs are in that home screen. Is iChat there? Any GPS functionality in GoogleMaps?

3G is the future but it is not the present and I'm not sure why so many people are making the 3G thing to be a big deal. First, it has Wi-Fi which is much faster than 3G so if you are in a city there's a decent chance you will pick up a hot spot. And the iPhone automatically switches you to wi-fi from EDGE if there is an available hot spot, you don't have to keep checking. Second, tech writers have done tests and 3G speeds have much greater potential than EDGE speeds, but at the moment it is not that much faster because the 3G towers or whatever they are aren't that great at resource allocation yet. Cingular has also just done a major upgrade to some of its weakest perfoming EDGE towers to get better speeds. No 3G is definitely not a deal breaker for me.

Have you ever tried browsing on a PDA sized screen with an EDGE connection? It sucks.

The only real sunlight-readable displays I've seen are the modded touchscreens that MP3car.com sells for using with a carputer and those run $600+ alone. Not even my Motorola Q can be read in direct sunlight and it has the brightest screen of any phone I've ever seen. But I agree, that's going to be something of a weak point because I can still dial without a screen in direct sunlight, which would be hard to do on a touchscreen phone if you can't see the keys to dial...

Here are the manufacturer's announcements so far:

$500 - 4gb iPhone (with 2-year contract)
$600 - 8gb iPhone (with 2-year contract)

5 hours talk-time/video/browsing
16 hours audio

No one knows if the phone will be discounted with a service contract and I'm betting those numbers aren't accurate as far as battery life goes...marketing always lies.

Don't those prices already include the service discount?

We all know it is going to be a good/cool phone. The real question is: Is it worth the $$$? Or are you just paying for a 'look at me I have an iPhone!'?

Supposedly. That's what Apple has announced. No word on weather there will be any additional discounts or not.

Well, you kind of do the "look at me!" thing with any first-generation product. I've learned the hard way not to buy first-generation products. Just look at some of the glaring problems with the first-gen iPhone:

-no 3G support
-no built-in GPS (Google Maps but no GPS?)
-high prices ($500 - $600)
-Cingular-only (CDMA > GSM in my area by FAR)
-no user-replaceable battery
-no 3rd-party apps (they say eventually though)
-most likely low battery life (takes a lot of juice to power a screen that big)

It will still be a cool phone, but I'll wait until revision 2 or 3 to get one. First-gen products are always rushed to the market with the plan of fixing the known bugs after the initial shipment, if at all.
