Default How to break off security clip on pants?

All right, on Saturday I bought a nice pair of black pants for the conference I have to attend tomorrow. As I was coming out of Macys store, the alarm went off. I stood there for a little waiting for someone to check the bag, but nobody cared, and I didn't think of it twice.

Fast forward to 10 minutes ago. I take the pants out to iron them and put them in the luggage (leaving tomorrow morning), and I find out that sales guy forgot to remove the security clip! He was too busy upselling me on other junk to do his job right. Damn.

Now I don't have time to go to the store tomorrow morning, as my flight leaves early. Which leaves me with:

- dremel
- knife
- metal-cutting scissors
- hand saw
- drill
- nice set of pants I do not want to destroy or cover with tiny plastic shavings

What's the easiest way to break off the clip?

pic of the clip

UPDATE: TJ Max employee took off the tag for me.

ouch... outside of cutting them off somehow, i dont see how you're not going to rip them.

if you have the receipt.. try taking them to a 24-hour walmart.. see if they have a machine to pop it off... try explaining to them and they might work with ya

get a sharpie, color that thing black, deal with it later

one time at a conference my pants ripped right next to the zipper flap. i colored my underwear (tighty whities) with a sharpie and no one ever noticed

Be careful. Many, if not all have an ink cartridge inside that'll squirt ink everywhere if you break it.

At the bottom of one of the legs, close to the cuff.

Soon to be arrested for trying to get Target to remove security tag from shoplifted pants. I hope paulney brings the receipt with him. Even with it, good luck.

oh sure.. take credit for my suggestion

i actually did that once... bought a pair of pants at Sterns (when they were still in business) .. got home and found that stupid security clip on it.

Took the pants to an all night wal-mart... explained the situation... laughed... and they then popped the tag off in the mens department using their security removal tool thingie.

hope it works out for ya paulney

If the diplomatic solution doesn't work, I'd just take your Dremel to the round bit, cutting only from edge to the center pin. You might not even have to go all the way through, just enough to get through most of the plastic. Then take a large flathead screwdriver or chisel or knife and kind of work it so you can snap that piece in half or at least open it up PacMan style enough to slip it off the pin. Then you'll have enough of the pin exposed to hack the end off with snips or the Dremel. You'll avoid risking cutting the pants, and shouldn't disturb any paint/anthrax packets that might be buried in the body of the tag. Good luck!

I went to Target, and they do not use this security tag system, so they do not have equipment to remove it (shoplifters, take note!)
But there was a TJ Max next door. Of course, it was closed at 10pm, but I decided to try my luck - and lo and behold, there was some lady still working inside, hanging clothes back on the racks. I knocked, explained everything through the store glass, and she opened the door just enough for me to hand her the pants. She took off the tag, then handed them back to me in a similar fashion and wished me a good flight!

Score!

Also, anyone want a pair of hot pants? Just kidding!
