Default What happened to Mitsubishi?

I don't really keep up with the auto industry but have noticed that I haven't seen a Mitsubishi ad or driven past a Mitsubishi dealer in years. I do see the occasional Lancer out there, but even that's rare.

Are they still around? what happened to them? Years ago I thought of them as being very similar to Mazda - not top-tier, but a maker of decent cars...

They're still around. I've seen a few of then new Lancers and a few of the last-gen Galants, but otherwise I don't see or hear about them very often.

I see quite a few Outlanders around here. The nearest Mitsubishi dealership went out of business, but I think that was due as much to inept salespeople as anything else.

I see a lot of the new eclipses and Outlanders running around. As for the company, they are heavily in debt because they catered to the lowest tier of buyers as possible and wound up absorbing millions in defaulted loans.

LOL

I help manage some dealerships and I drive a 2009 Galant as a demo. Great car and I love the Rockford Fosgate sound system.

You didn't ever go to this dealership
I think they probably could have failed no matter what brand they carried, they were that bad. None of the other dealerships on this road has failed in that time.

The Montero Sport used to be a kick ass SUV.

Mitsubishi seemed like a confused company. They mushed up and lost the soul of the original Eclipse, making it a fat, sloppy, underwhelming mess. They dragged their feet bringing the Evo over, and it was still too $$$ to be practical as a mass-market vehicle. Their quality is uniformly understood to be below Honda/Toyota/Nissan, and there's no sense of a style that makes the brand. When you see a Honda, you know it's a Honda, when you see a BMW, you know it's a BMW. When you see a Mitsubishi, one might think : is that a Mazda? A Kia? A Suzuki? Oh, it's a DSM.

If they can't come up with something compelling, then good riddance. We have quite enough mediocrity already

When Mitsubishi pulls out from the American market, will cars like the 3000GT be cheaper to buy? Or are they going to be more expensive?

They're pretty damned cheap as it is, but if anything, they will probably begin to slowly raise in values. They are rare to find in good working condition, particularly the VR-4, which is the only noteworthy model.
