USPS damaged my package and I didn't get insurance...am I out of luck?
Hey,
I've shipped maybe 10 items from ebay in my life and never used insurance and had a problem with damage. USPS clearly damaged my package and the buyer wants a refund. Is there anything I can do? Thanks

If you didn't insure it, then you owe him a refund. Did the buyer send pictures of the box BEFORE he opened it?

What happens if the option for insurance is in the ebay listing and the buyer chooses not to use insurance and then something like this occurs? Still screwed?

Actually it's USPS Express Mail's policy Link. I'm going to give him a refund...bah $-15 ($12 shipping + ebay fees) loss for a freakin $20 package.

How do you know he did not already have a broken item and is now trying to scam you? Is there a way for you to verify the broken item is really yours? Personally I'd make him return the broken one at his cost.

You shouldn't make insurance an option. It should be insurance automatically since the seller is the one being protected by it, not the buyer.

Yep tell write "return to sender" on the package. When you get it then refund.

It's the seller's responsibility to get the item to the buyer, insurance or not.
If you claim they didn't buy insurance, their credit card company will tell you that it's your problem.

You are insured up to $100 by default with UPS and Fedex.
Not with USPS.

I laugh every time I see an auction where the seller makes the buyer decide whether they (the buyer) wants insurance or not. Insurance protects the seller not the buyer. If a seller ships to a winner of one of these auctions and the item is damaged ... the seller might say "But you chose no insurance!" In this case all the buyer has to do is 1) Post negative feedback (no one wants that) and 2) do a chargeback with PP or their CC company (if they paid that way). In this case the seller really screwed themselves.
Ebay should eliminate that option in all of their auctions and let the sellers decide to insure or not.
