no, unless he does something special and doesn't charge you.

Not that I have ever heard of.
edit: with the obvious exception if they give you stuff for free as mentioned above.

If he just does the standard install I wouldn't bother ... only tip him if he goes above & beyond whats to be expected.

I'd offer him a drink, at most, unless he has to do some hardcore wiring (installing wires through the wall, for example).

I wouldn't, they are doing their job- not providing you with something other than what they get paid to do.

Some folks may do that so they leave these out of the line.

They don't take tips. I told the cable guy he could keep the pen I lent him one time, but he said "No, it could be considered a tip".

Why would you tip a person that is already making 15 - 20 per hour?

Unless he goes out of his way to do something for you, I wouldn't think so. If it's a standard installation, he'll be happy enough with his regular pay. If it's a service call and he's there for a long time, you might want to consider a tip. If he helps you out with your sound system or something similar, something he didn't HAVE to do. Yeah you should probably consider a tip.

Dude!
This is ATOT!
You tip no one, anywhere, anytime, for anything!
Especially Waitresses and Pizza Delivery folks.
Personally, I will tip just about anyone if: they go above & beyond what is required, they are exceptionally efficient at what they do, or if the do an extra good job.

Yeah, a little over 10x that amount, actually.

Well, As a satellite installer I can tell you that we appreciate tips, by the time we pay for gas and supplies most are making around minimum wage, sometimes less depending on gas prices

Tipping the cable guy is not nice! If the cows don't like it, why would he?

Is it customary to tip the cable guy?
<-- was a Southern Manhattan NYC Time Warner Cable tech for 5 years
Before 9/11 I used to average ~100/day in tips, after 9/11, less than that in a week. I miss those days. Yes, it's nice to tip a cable guy, but it isn't necessary. I used to hate when I went the extra mile for some people and didn't get a single penny though. Many people will act like they are gonna tip you, and then stiff you...lol

Funny. But you know waiters aren't paid solely by the restaurant to do what they do. Most of their income comes from tips.
