A very interesting combination. The 90W is properly out of the question, the TI has a 60W TDP limit. That plus Kabini's 25W would already push you up to 85W. You could use a 750non-TI, it uses slightly less power (55W) and I don't think the 5350 will max out the TI anyway.

Benchmarks should be very interesting. Just how far can you push Kabini...?

Although I haven't tested it yet I don't think the 750 TI + 5350 combination will pull more than 75W in normal uses so a 120W adapter should be more than adequate. If this works out well I will likely hunt down a low profile 750 non TI to stuff into a tiny enclosure for better balance and a few watts of savings.

Basically I'm trying to find the right combination of the lowest possible power (first) in the smallest quietest enclosure (second) with the best possible performance (third) for a casual steam box / HTPC. Although the argument of going Intel makes a lot of sense in many (most) cases, I think AMD may have them beat here.

I -think- there are some low-profile 750TI's available. In my experience low-profile cards use slightly less power then their full-size brethren. They might be worth looking into.

To use a VC , moreover such a big one , the ATX supply is mandatory, the 19V input cant manage its currents and power rating that largely exceed the onboard DC converter capabilities.

Just tried a ebay 12V/3A adapter and it works ok.

idle=8W(i3-3140=14W)
P95=31W(i3-3140=69W)
P95+furmark=38W(i3-4130=83W)
FFXIV=27W score=1559 (i3-4130=50W,score=2483)
running a MKV movie at Full HD=13W (G3220=21W,i3-4130=17W)

Thanks for the comparisons. So for many uses the 5350 is still amazingly energy efficient and likely a good alternative to Intel. After my 750 TI testing (see OP for updated testing) I'm a little torn over the value of this platform vs. an undervolted G1820 + 750. With Microsoft releasing DX12 and the awareness to reduce draw call overhead upcoming games will likely reduce the CPU overhead further allowing for these weaker CPU's to continue to be an option for the value Steambox.

So far my testbox was without any commercial virusscanner. After having installed Comodo Internet Security Premium and Malwarebytes my pc became really slow to load, if it was busy doing a malware scan. Removing Malwarebytes and Comodo and then installing Bitfender Internet Security it was ok again. I saw the usage of the CPU to be 75% all the time when doing a malwarescan. Here the low operating frequency starts showing some stress when loaded.

PS I saw(in A-Tune) my 12V mobo voltage is 10.7 V with a 12V supply. No problem because everything is converted to 5V and lower and the SSD uses no mechanical motor.
Only 12V hardware is the CPU cooler.......this 10.7V makes it only quieter.

You get a sata power cable in the box. It can power 2 sata drives.
With my Thin ITX mobo I got a sata power cable for 3 sata drives.

Regarding the stuttering of the AM1-5350 when running a virusscanner full scan, my G3220 setup also has problems with it. Not as much as the 5350 but it certainly has. An i3-4130 does much better here. Intel CPU's seem to have the snappier experience when the CPU get fully loaded.

bgt, any idea what the lightest weight virus scanner is? I want to re-enable anti-virus protection but I'm concerned over the speed reduction.

FYI I did more testing with the Radeon 7970 vs the 750 TI and can safely say the 750 TI provides a better overall gaming experience with the Kabini CPU. The framerates in some games are quite a bit higher (Borderlands 2) so for people thinking they're better off with an AMD card should take this into consideration.

It's kind of amazing to see Borderlands 2 + 7970 consume between 160-220 watts and produce *lower* framerates compared to the 750 TI which only consumes around 50-75W.

Of course the handful of Mantle enabled games are better with the Radeon cards but if you're evaluating a large number of games the nvidia cards come out ahead.

In the end what is the best card to pair up with this platform? That's a little hard to answer but I saw enough instances where the 750 TI was able to stretch it's legs that I can recommend it as a solution.

It's also comforting knowing this combination will on only consume in the low 20 watts idle and 40-75W while gaming so if you pair the Kabini up with a low profile 7750 you could save a few more watts under load and get creative by cramming that into say, I dunno, maybe a gutted NES system for giggles and still have a viable gaming platform.

Also interesting to note is taking into consideration the ability to undervolt. I'm sure if you picked up the Asus board you could overclock and undervolt the APU and perhaps do the same with the 750 to improve performance and reduce load power even more.

Thanks guys, I disabled the built in defender as it was causing the large CPU spikes. I guess I'll just resort to old school methods of enabling/disabling once per week on a schedule and scan for malware. Not the safest or smartest method but it works.

thanks bgt, those numbers are really amazing, basically you reach the best efficiency with an inexpensive psu but with the right amount of power
i wonder if it is possible to cut a few more watt with a better quality 12v psu

This is the lowest I can get with any 12V adapter here in the house(with at least 3A).
PS I am waiting for the Asus board to C what OCing does on consumption & how high I can OC it.

That s as low as the lower result wich was performed by Computerbase.de with an LC 12V 75W adaptator and a DC-DC 24 pin ATX converter board and a basic MB.

6.7ma@230V(=about 1.5W) with a Fluke 29 series multimeter. My Watt meter can not go lower then 4W.
