Default Iphone 4-Static noise while during calls

I get this non stop static on my line while having phone calls. It's not new and has been going on for months now...It comes and goes, but this time it seems like its permanent and it's really bad. I made an appointment with the apple store to see if they can help...But it seems like a hardware problem.

I don't have insurance for the device...So am I basically just screwed? I was really hoping they would just send me a 4s or something for being a loyal customer. This phone is only 2.5 years old, I wouldn't expect it to crap the bed like this.

The device is 2.5 years old, which means it is out of contract, and if you had gotten a warranty on it, it would have only been good for those 2 years.

If you take it in, and are polite and not a total jerk (not saying that you are or would be, but apparently some people need to be told to not be an ass) they may be awesome, any they may not be.

They may replace it/fix it for little to no cost. But it is completely luck of the draw since it is out of warranty. That sort of thing is down (to my understanding) solely at the discretion of the store manager, and isn't done all the time anyway.

Again, out of warranty. They can definitely fix/replace it, but it will probably cost money. Depending on how much, it may be worthwhile to re-up your contract.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

As far as re-upping goes, I am due for an update since Sept. but I am honestly not that thrilled with any of the new iphones. Been holding out for either the 5s/6 or possibly the next Nexus phone.

If they can't replace/fix for cheap/free, I might end up buying a no contract android for cheap and scrape by until the next release of phones. I don't think the 5s will be anything too crazy over the 5 now...

a used iphone 4 8GB is about $200, so that's your worst-case.
