Question about pop filters

Curious - would stretching nylons directly over a microphone give the same effect as having a pop filter just off of the mic? Does there need to be a space between the pop filter and the mic?

Usually there's a space though some mics have a foam windsock over them that does the same thing. Pop filters are pretty inexpensive. You could make your own though out of a mason jar lid or wire coat hanger, and some nylons. There's not much too them.

I've made one with nylons an a coat hanger - it works well but is pretty ugly and isn't really portable. i was thinking if i can just stretch nylons directly over the mic it could just stay on all the time and the mic could still fit in the case.

Usually there is a space, not sure if it's necessary. I have this one from Amazon and it works perfectly.

At the moment, it kinda will break the bank - these are lean, lean times for me.

But mainly, I'd like to be able to take the pop filter with me in the little Samson GoMic case if possible. Maybe I'll just have to give it a go and see.

That's really kind, but it's ok. Things aren't as bad as they sound, just on a spending freeze until the next paycheck.

I tried just stretching the nylons over the mic - aside from the rustling I was making trying to hold it in place, there was still definite popping. My guess is that the nylons slow the air enough to keep it from hitting the mic forcefully if there is some distance, but a fair amount still gets through with some force when it is right up against the mic.
