Sad stuff. Especially since City of Heroes was still in the black, pulling in profits. It had one of the best communities around.
Real sudden move too: The developers had a new issue about to come out and plans for another year's worth of additions. It was a surprise 11th hour execution.

Darn, I hate to see this. I played City of Heroes when it first came out.
It had plenty of flaws, but a lot of fun also.
I'd like to see MMO companies find better ways to keep MMO's online in a low-cost mode where they just run to be available for the few who want to play.
People spend years making chars.

If they are just throwing in the towel, it would have been nice to see if there was a buyer. The game still seemed to have a good following.

Aww, geez - still have the CoV collector's edition in my closet, on my "some day..." list.
Best character creator I've used in any MMO before or since.
Big Bummer.

Too many game companies out there making mediocre games. Can't expect them to survive doing that.

My point exactly. CoH and CoV were crappy games. No one in their right mind would pay monthly fees for this junk unless they had money to burn. There was no good reason to play a 6/10 mmo when you could play a 8/10 or 9/10 unless you are one of those "because I can" people with spare money.

It's NCSoft. NCSoft has a habit of pulling the plug on games that tend to be popular and profitable if they're not making an acceptable minimum level of profitability for the company.
I'm not surprised with this one bit, given the relatively stable community CoX had.

ive never quite understood how you can have something that's "not profitable enough"

NCSoft is a Korean company... that should explain a lot in terms of their mentality and profit motives.

It's all about growth and investor expectations, and where management focuses its time and effort. Just because something isn't losing money doesn't mean that it is helping the company execute its plan and get where it wants to be.
