Yes, there have already been prices at this level. It's nice that it's official though. Could see some $299 7950's on sale, maybe?

With 7950 so low, there's no point of a 7870 at all. These cards are all beastly clockers, reaching >1.1ghz, its not to be judged at stock given AMD artificially neutered the clock speed.

Edit: Im going to install the PCS 7950 into my mitx rig later today.. its a hassle cos everything needs to be taken apart. Hopefully i can reach 1.2ghz

The hd7970 and hd7950 are getting price cuts because they aren't going to be produced anymore. Whatever is in the channel now is all that is left. AMD is going to intro the hd7950 soon, probably at the same price as the gtx670, and as soon as current stocks of the old 7900 cards are gone, the price cuts will be gone and the same-but-new cards will cost more (although less than their original MSRP back in January and February's launch).

They are discontinuing the 7950 to release the 7950? Do you mean the 8950? If so any evidence that your statement is true?

I think he means ghz edition. Although sea islands has taped out, its not an imminent release I don't believe. If he's referring to the ghz edition, he is incorrect and there's no evidence to the contrary, 7970/7950 aren't discontinued.

Rather than simply replacing the original Radeon HD 7970, AMD sees its 1000+ MHz model coexisting. [GHz edition]Prices are going to start at $500, the company says, and we’re assuming that covers the reference-class board. Cards with aftermarket cooling will almost certainly cost more. Expect to start seeing availability next week, with broader supply rolling in the week after.

7950 has already been available at $340...does that mean the price will get even lower?

Im going to have to agree with this. Since their cores nearly all run 1ghz+ fine or more, there's no reason for them to continue the normal SKUs once it clears retail and out of stock. Ghz Ed will replace them and drop to their prices once the originals are out.

The GE edition is pretty much a desperate move. Also why its not on sale yet.

Havent the street prices already reached this level or even lower ?
I remember reading about 7870s being sold for 280 USD. Glancing at the Hot Deals subforum
we had 410 USD 7970 with 3 games included as well as a 7950 for 300 USD .

I disagree. the 680 is clocked that high already. I suspect that AMD put out the 7970 at 925mhz to get as many out the door as quick as possible on an immature process. As the process matures, high clocks become easier to obtain. They're also overclocking monsters, look at the reports for all of the 7series GPUs, virtually all of them hit 1.2ghz

Also, while the 'egg doesn't have any 7970s labeled as "Gigahertz Edition" in stock, I counted seven with a core clock of 1000mhz or higher.

I don't think it is a desperate move. AMD would be making a mistake by keeping the 79xx clocked low when just about all of them can hit 1GHz+ and sell for more than a lower clocked version. As an exagerated example, I wouldn't expect Nvidia to sell a 400MHz GTX680 for $100 when they can get 1.1GHz and $500 for them, would you?

You confuse overclocking with having to QA every chip for every environment etc. Its like saying Intel should sell 4Ghz+ SB/IB.

The reference HD7970GE is already a powerhungry super loud dustbuster. Its not a planned product.

AMD solidifying the med range card pricing before NV drops the 660, good move!

I guess I don't see reacting to market conditions and competition as desperate. There is a lot of talk stating the GK104 was not supposed to be the GTX680, that it had it's clocks pushed to beat the 7970. I don't see that as desperate. To me both simply capitalized on an opportunity based on the conditions at the time.

Desperate move? Nearly every manufacturer has SKUs clocked that high ANYWAY....so it doesn't make sense to make another SKU unless it is clocked that much higher (ie sapphire toxic clocked at 1200)

The lightning, Vortex 2, several others were already clocked higher than the supposed "GHz edition" anyway and came out months ago.

Its a forum rumour that the GK104 was pushed to higher clocks. GK104 already reached 2Ghz on extreme OC as well. Not to mention that GK104 uses around the same power as GF104. Since AMD increased the power consumption, can we then conclude they pushed the clocks higher than they was supposed to be? Not really can we?

Its only the GE card thats unplanned. Unless AMDs GPU engineers and sales people are all deaf.
And sofar the HD7970GE is nowhere to be seen.

Quote:
The 7970GE will not appear in stores until next week and widespread availability isn’t expected until July
Quote:
Availability on the other hand is the big question mark here since none of the board partners we spoke to would commit to a retail availability date and instead chose to say “within the next few weeks” for cards "resembling" the clock speeds of the reference GHz Edition.
Basicly they have no clue. That doesnt sound planned to me. It was all statements 3weeks+ ago.

Is the 7850 dropping to or below $200?
