GTX 670 or second GTX 580?

I have the upgrade bug (it must be a spring thing). Right now I have a Zotac GTX 580 Fermi on a i7 2600k OC@ 4.4 (750w PSU)

Seeing as up here in Vancouver the 580’s are going for the same price as the 670’s do you think it would be better to go a single 670 or upgrade to SLI 580’s?


I mostly MMO ( swtor, wow, star trek, CoH) and things like D3, Dragon Age, Mass Effect.

Two 580s will destroy the 670.

edit: I would say 580SLI is about 60% faster than a 670 depending on scaling. That said, looking at your game list, you don't need that much power for what I assume is 1080P running those games ? 580 is also old tech and the 670 would be far, far less obnoxious to run than the two 580s. If your 4870 rig has a psu that can support the 580, a 670 would be a more pleasant choice than your current 580. Just don't expect a holy wow upgrade feeling from the switch. 20% is not that impactful imo. 580SLI would result in a huge gain of graphics power, the 670 wouldn't.

Granted it may be 'faster' but I will never sli again after 295 issues i had. Plus you're going to use 2-3x the power with sli 580s.

My answer is 670 and OC it and sell GTX 580 to some fool who thinks it has value, and they are still out there.

Thanks all, Maybe I should wait for the 580 to start dogging a bit more.

Since I mostly RPG I wasn't sure if SLI was the best way to go.

I could see maybe going for the Asus 670 when available if you don't wanna deal with sli.

Guess you could always offset the cost of another 670 selling the 580 if you need more power than a single 670

750watts psu isn't enuf. You will need a bigger psu. But 580 sli > 670 oc by a long shot

SLI will require a new PSU plus new video card. You will have more power, 2 GTX 580s BUT you will use much more power. I would either sell the 580 and buy a GTX 670 or use the GTX 580 in another rig. BTW, very nice rig!

I wonder if you can SLI the GTX 670 with your GTX 580? If it can, the GTX 670 just performs as a second GTX 580...

If you are primarily an MMO player, the 670 maybe a good choice. If you look at SLI scaling for WoW, it's not great. If you look at performance betweene the GTX 590 (similar to GTX 580SLI) and the 670 was not night and day.

Plus, the value of having a 580 + 670 in two machines is greater than 580x2 in one machine. Put the old 4870 out to pasture.

There is a difference between poor scaling, and cpu limited. Given how close the 480 is to the 580 in those tests to the tune of .8 fps at 1600 I'd lean towards it be a case of cpu limitation.

580SLI is a good 30-40% faster, but you're looking at 750w+ compared to 300w, not to mention the heat and noise of the SLI setup.

I'd sell the 580 and go with the 670.

OC ur 580,670 is not a great upgrade over 580.

A 580 oc is very close to 670 stock. But a 670 box oc can be oced further as well

Outside of power usage, 28nm is pretty much a big joke, especially if you have a decent 40nm chip or two already.
