LG vs Samsung for Washer/Dryer - and is a Steam Dryer worth the extra $$?
We've narrowed our search for a washer/dryer to a few top loading models from LG and Samsung.
The samsung is a bit pricier, but also has a steam dryer.
Is there a big difference between LG/Samsung?
Is the steam dryer worth the extra $$?

The thing that's tough about this is most people only know what they own and most probably never had both brands in their homes.
I can tell you that I have a front load Samsung washer / Samsung dryer and they're awesome. As for the steam $, I haven't pulled out my ironing board in the past year since owning the set.

I did a ton of research before buying my set 3 months ago, and between those two brands, not much difference. Theyre both great products.
And yes. Steam is worth the extra $$$.

I do not know if we have used the steam option that we have on the LG.
My daughter researched the LG against other models and settled on the LG.
Mainly because she was able to get a year old display model for $700 less plus another 15% for a small dent

Did you see any info on how the quality of LG compares to when it was Goldstar? I know Goldstar was a brand you wanted to stay away from and I doubt changing a names makes something better.

I see presumably entry level LG front loading washer dryer, $500 each, in Sunday newspaper ads.
Anyone know if these are any good, or are recs based upon going much higher up in LG line?

I was faced with having to get another dryer and didn't want to spend the $ for new since i live by myself and don't really do that many loads of clothes. I found a Whirlpool large capacity dryer on craigslist for $25. It had some cosmetic issues on the top and could use some new paint, but it actually works great. The only reason I'm mentioning this is that often when people move they don't really want to move their washer and dryer along with everything else. Just don't expect to find a deal at a price like I found.

I cant comment as to the Goldstar brand. All I know if LG and Samsung place in the top 5-10 in w/d sets on almost every survey including consumer reports.
edit: I ended up going with a top of line Frigidaire Affinity Steam set, as theyre made by Electrolux which is the Caddy of appliances. Got them on a sale I found on accident for $599/each.

goldstar was a POS but after they changed to LG they started anew and have their things together.

Thats probably true but the last top loading washer I've seen in a house was owned by my grandmother.
And shes been dead for twenty years.
It had a mangle on top.

I understand. But people still buy them for various reasons. Kenmore still makes an Elite series top loader, for example.

I think this may be a US only thing. I've not seen a top loader in the UK for years (decades).

In the end we decided to save the $180 for the pair and go for the LG model w/o steam. The price difference was $584 (LG) vs $678 (Samsung).

Have you guys seen some of the newer top loaders? The ones without the agitators? One reason I may switch back though is space. I love the front loads I have but they're massive.

The wife prefers top loaders, not fully sure why but she does. Also, without the pedestals the front loaders are mighty low to the ground.

Thats the one we got - its a top loader w/o an agitator. The center spins opposite the walls to create a vortex of spinning water.
Also - the top loaders run a cycle noticeably faster standard cycle than a front loader.

I got my washer for free, a coworker's wife decided they needed a new washer and dryer so I got the old ones. They must be 20+ years old but still work great. Then again, they have nothing to go wrong on them. They don't have any of the fancy gizmos that the newer machines stick on, there's just less to break.

I did the same, went with the LG with the Steam and don't think it's really worth the extra $$$.

Had a high efficiency front loader. After about 6 years, gasket cracked in several places and was a pain to replace, pumps died, and it became louder and louder each year. Went to an high efficiency top loader (without an agitator) and absolutely love it.
