Default Woman calls 911 about limping deer in her yard. Cops shoot, take pics with dead deer.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Anna Shelton is angry about the lack of compassion she said Sandy Springs officers showed an injured deer.

"I didn't think they were going to shoot the animal," said Shelton.

When Shelton saw a big buck limping in her neighbor's yard, she didn't know who to call to help it, so she called 911.

"I figured 911 could give me a starting point," said Shelton.

Then Shelton said she called the Department of Natural Resources, Fulton County Animal Control and an animal rescue group.

"They all basically said for everybody to get away from the buck it will eventually lay down, even with the hurt leg," said Shelton.

But that didn't happen. Shelton said officers and animal control tried to catch the deer.

Shelton said after they chased it for about an hour she heard two gunshots.

"The whole thing is just disturbing. That's not how this should have played out," said Shelton.

Sandy Springs Lieutenant Steve Rose said, "It's unfortunate that we had to do this, but to allow the animal to suffer from an injury that is as devastating as this would be inhumane."

Rose said the officer got permission from his supervisor before he shot the deer.

The homeowner called David McLeod with Georgia Wildlife Service to pick up the dead deer.

McLeod said the officers did the deer a favor by shooting it.

"In my opinion with the injury the deer had, he would have suffered a long, lingering death," said McLeod.

The 11-point buck had a broken leg.

"Yes it was hurt. Maybe it should have been put down, but I don't think that animal was given a fair chance, and then to sit there and take photos with it, 'Wow look at me and all these great horns,'" said Shelton.

Shelton took her own pictures of the officer's posing with the dead deer's head.

Rose said the officers likely took the pictures to add to their report.

"I think is uncalled for and I'm disappointed in the police in doing so," said Shelton.

Police did the humane thing by killing it, then took photo's that I am sure are needed after they disharged their weapon. This hippie needs to get over it.

i saw an almost dead deer (was hit by a car presumably) on the side of the road one time, but i had no decent way of putting it out of its misery. i felt kinda crappy.

cops did the right thing. wth did the woman expect? a deer paramedic crew and amublance?

most animals harvested by law enforcement in the line of duty go to food banks or the local jail, it varies

Shooting it was probably the best thing they could do.

Is that too much to ask? They have animal ambulances on tv.

Stupid women. Probably a PETA nut who wanted the police to nurse and care for the poor deer.

Yes, let's waste tax payer's money on saving an animal that's likely going to be hunted and killed later on in its life.

There would be no way of saving the animal. Killing it is the most humane thing really.

Died of a slow and lingering death?
Bullshit. Horses - yes. Deer - no.

I've seen deer that have survived broken legs. One of the guys I hunt with got a deer that obviously had a healed broken hind leg. It's kinda funny that this woman was referred to as a clueless urban dweller, but the majority of people posting also seem clueless. Nonetheless, I have zero problem with law enforcement shooting the animal, provided they donate the venison to a homeless shelter or something. Here's another message board with a lot of people witnessing deer surviving a broken leg. http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=274410

Fair enough, but I imagine it would depend on the type of break.

Did they take pictures like they were posing with it? I can't tell for sure what's going on in that picture they have in the OP's link.

If so, that seems pretty unprofessional.
