Default WTF, which is spicier- Mild or Medium?

I was at the supermarket craving some salsa and chips. The pansy ass store didn't have any nuclear hot.

I saw the Tostito's brand. They only had Mild (green colored) and Medium (yellow).

Going by the color convention, you would think yellow is hotter than green, yes?

Then I saw Newman's brand. They had Mild (green colored) and Medium (BLUE wtf).

They're contradictory.......... I bought the Newman's Medium since I like their brand.

I don't even taste a HINT of spice. Ugh.

Medium is hotter.

I find most mass store brands idea of hot is a lot milder than what I expect. You have to get some specialty salsa if you really want it hot, or just make it yourself.

Yeah I've had this problem, too. Mostly with wings.

I'll go to a place and order mild (which I hope is one step down from hot). It's hit or miss. I'd go right for the hot wings but some places are just ridiculous.

I want FDA to properly regulate this coloring and naming convention of salsas.

You would think colors getting 'closer' to red would be hotter. They're inconsistent.

Tostitos:
Green (mild) -> Yellow (medium)

Newman's:
Blue (medium) -> Green (mild)

Makes zero sense.

blue is hotter than red



edit: and giant fail for buying newman's own. it's meant to appeal to wasps, to whom a jalapeno is too spicy.

What makes zero sense is buying a jarred salsa. That's your problem right there. Go to Mexican Mart. Buy fresh salsa. Profit. Or make your own.

Let's play a really simple game of semantics, k?

Medium describes a point between two extremes; it usually describes a halfway point or somewhere close.

Mild is used in contradiction with "hot" (right?) so we can easily infer that Mild must be describing the opposite end of the spectrum from "hot."

If mild is on one end and medium is in the middle, which do you THINK will be less spicy?

I was wondering if I was missing something. I was tearing apart the OP for the deeper meaning I just don't understand. There is no deeper meaning :^D

I don't buy salsa much, but Pace hot picante is pretty good. I haven't had any jarred salsa I thought was exceptional, but Pace is the best one I remember.

without reading the OP, I assume he's referring to some cases of surprisingly spicy medium, or even mild?

I think it's a seasonal thing with the good, fresh salsas. The jalepeno can either be completely mild and useless, or quite hot. when these makers don't change their recipes to compensate for the random spiciness of certain peppers, this can happen.

Yep Hatch, New Mexico. The best!!!

You can also get it from Socorro and it's still just as good. You have to roast it before you eat it. You can do it yourself or pay extra and have the store roast it for you. The aroma of chili roasting is what I smell every fall. So good....
