Default Hauppauge HVR 1800 tuner

Vista64. PVR-150 no longer works with 4GB RAM so I got this 1800 now.

The card plays and records analog (composite from my FIOS tv feed) just fine in Media Center but I want MPEG2 output (easier to edit) so I need WINTV6 (or even WINTV2000) to work. It plays ok in WINTV6 but when I hit record, it tells me:

Stream DShow Error
StartEncoder: No Data from Encoder
Unspecified error (0x80004005)

Searches on this come back as either incomplete installation or just a bad hardware encoder on the card. It's not the latter as Media Center records just fine right? About the incomplete install, I've installed so many different versions and drivers (using HCWClear in between each) that I've run out of options now.

Anyone ever experience this?

I've tried alternatives like GBPVR (too complicated) and apparently SageTV isnt' free. All I need this PVR for is record some 2hr hockey games once in a while and cut clips from the mpg.

i'm not too familiar with its recording features, but have you tried watchhdtv? it's a free app and much lighter on resources than any of the included Hauppauge software. i use this with a hvr-1600 card.

^ it looks like that's only good for OTA stuff. I need to record from my FIOS feed (composite connection).

thanks though I would love if it could capture directly to mpeg2 since I don't want to have it convert 2.5hrs of video every night just so I can cut out (and post) a minute or two's worth of highlight video. WINTV capped right to mpeg2 and I just used womble mpeg editor to cut the minutes I needed.

Is MCE able to record to mpeg2 (Hauppauge's hardware encoder) directly? Someone says their ViXS PureTV-U 48B0 card does it even while using MCE.

Yes, MCE records in MPEG-2, although it's saved in Microsoft's own dvr-ms container.

I guess I don't know the differences regarding containers. I can't seem to modify that dvr-ms file with mpeg2 editors such as Womble MPEG Video Wizard.

I have found VideoReDo which edits dvr-ms directly, but it doesn't have extras like transition effects (fade in/out).

And that's the exact problem with the different container. You'll need something that can convert the video to a standard MPEG2 container. I think DVRMSToolbox will do the trick.

Well Hauppauge actually responded to my tech support email and it's working now.

It was Vista's UAC... turn that off completely and it works just fine. I asked if they planned on supporting recording with UAC turned on (because frankly this is only a workaround) so we'll see what they say...

Curious - how would you feel about UAC being turned off just for an application to work?
