Default So is american cheese actually good for you?

I know american cheese gets a bad rap because it's "processed cheese" rather than traditional cheese, but I just looked it up on wikipedia and:

Quote:
Today’s American cheese is generally no longer made from a blend of other cheeses, but instead is manufactured from a set of ingredients[1] such as milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, and salt.
So it has whey protien. Could it be that it is actually not bad but rather good for you?

Whey protein doesn't magically make something good for you. If you like it, it's fine. It's tasty for some things.

Oh good my fears that a cheeseburger would one day poke my eye out with a magic wand seem so silly now.

American cheese isn't actually cheese.

Note they call them Kraft Singles and then under it "cheese product"

Isn't it better than cheese given the whey protien contained within?

What's so special about whey protein except that it's a safe alternative to melamine?

It still tastes like crap. I won't eat it unless I'm starving and there is nothing else available.

CHEESE:
Herbs, spices, or wood smoke may be used as flavoring agents.
For a few cheeses, the milk is curdled by adding acids such as vinegar or lemon juice

American Cheese:
milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, and salt.

Thoughts:
Milk proteins are usually part of the cheese making process. Salt is a "flavoring agent". American cheese is basically cheese with whey. I'm sure there are a bunch of other things like Yellow(40) to. But those are very small amounts and some can be considered "flavor agents".

Conclusion:
Seems that the American in American Cheese is Whey. No harm in that? If you like it, eat it. Anything in moderation is good for you. Frankly, I'd think that having one go to cheese that is the "best for you" is not as good as having that cheese and 3 others including american chesse taht you mix up.

With the cost of cheese, I quite frankly want hte cheapest cheese I can find or atleast to find it on sale.

If it was technically cheese, they would go ahead and call it cheese instead of cheese product.

After discsussin with co-workers (nerds). It seems that American cheese is simply made from the raw ingrediants that cheese has at some stage during the cheese making process. The line between american cheese and cheese is a thin wavy one. In terms of health, I don't see the benefit of one oer the other. Might as well jsut look at detailed nutritional info. Especially fat, cholesteral, carbs, protein, etc.

I'm not making fun, but this question is a tad funny (the haha kind).

Let's just check out some quick data, though. A google search took me to caloriecount.about.com to do a quick comparison of the nutritional data for an average slice of several cheeses (1oz). Here's how they stack up to American cheese:

Mozzarella: more calcium, less sodium, more protein, less saturated fat
Swiss: more calcium, less sodium, more protein, about the same saturated fat
Cheddar: more calcium, less sodium, more protein, more saturated fat

Doesn't look like that whey protein is doing much for the American cheese.

it's not as good for you as other cheeses, but I cannot eat a Burger with any other cheese on it, American cannot be replaced in certain things imho.

I usually buy blocks of cabot or similar in various flavors. It's not overly expensive. I might eat 50 cents worth of it a day. Usually, it is a snack before bed time. I abide alot by the idea that diversity is better for my body.

Why not eat cyanide? Or asbestos? Diversity is good for you!

Whey protein isn't some magical substance that automatically makes whatever it's put into 'good' for you. Putting whey protein into a bowl of lard isn't suddenly going to make it some kind of super food of which you should eat lots and lots (unless you want to gain weight).

Because those things WILL kill you.

Do you drive on the road every day where fatal car accidents occur? OH NO! THE TERROR!
