Thumbs down AT&T to force U-verse upgrade on DSL users at the customers expense

Wouldn't be a bad upgrade but you may have to pay for the modem, activation, installation costs, etc.

Conversion from DSL to U-verse High Speed Internet: We have added
language to this agreement that will allow us to convert customers from our DSL
network to the AT&T U-verse High Speed network, where available.

  1. Conversion from DSL to U-verse High Speed Internet. When AT&T is able to provision Service to you via our U-verse High Speed Internet at your location, we may, in our discretion, discontinue your DSL service and make available to you AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet at the then applicable rates, terms and conditions, which may differ from your previous DSL Service rates, terms and conditions (including bundle discounts). If you are on a term plan and your price will increase as a result of this conversion, you will not have to pay any applicable ETF if you elect to cancel service.
  2. Your new AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet will require different customer premises equipment ("CPE"). When you are selected for conversion, we will provide at least thirty days' notice of the discontinuation of your service via e-mail. Thirty days after such notice, we may at our sole discretion, either disconnect your service or temporarily suspend your service for up to fifteen days before we permanently discontinue service.

Must not be having much problems with capacity then if they are pushing more users towards higher bandwidth connections.

It must be nice to be able to tell a customer they have to buy a whole new product.

Kinda like chevy or ford telling you that your car is outdated, and they will be there in 15 days to pick it up. If you want a car, your going to have to buy a new one from them, and at prices they set.

Wow, AT&T is really starting to become the old AT&T.

As a current AT&T DSL customer I see zero problems with the way that they are doing this. I'm on a month to month contract so I can quit at any moment. They can also decide to stop offering their service at any moment.

Your comparison is completely false. It's like saying that you've been renting a '89 ford taurus from Enterprise for every weekend for $29 and Enterprise finally has decided to stop maintaining the '89 taurus but has a 2009 Explorer for $55 a day. Nobody is making you get the Explorer. AT&T isn't "making" anyone get U-Verse, they are simply saying in some areas that they aint gonna sell DSL service anymore. Don't like it, move on.

It would suck for me as a consumer because I enjoy paying $24.99 a month for internet, but I'll suck it up and pay more if $24.99 a month internet is no longer available in my area.

Look at it as upgrading their infrastructure like you guys always say they don't. That's a significant upgrade in service.

They won't eat Verizon so they can maintain the illusion of competition even though they'll both gladly match in the raping of their customers rather than try to undercut each other.

Of course you'd say this is ok. If you said otherwise you'd be without a job.

Lulz, I have no trouble finding employment. More like who wants to pay me the most. There aren't enough strong networking folks out there to meet the challenges in the industry. Supply/demand, live it, learn it, love it.

And it's only getting more complicated and complex. I love my job. You fools will bitch and whine and moan about this, but in the end, it's inevitable. We know this, I know this, and all you intarweb whiners are nothing more then that old guy down the street shaking his fist at the power company.

You will take it up the ass, because you cannot "live" without.

Lack of competition makes you buy what is available.

If I was renting a ford taurus, and Enterprise decided to stop maintaining the '89 taurus, I could buy a chevy, dodge, toyota, nissan,,, or some other model.

When a company has a monopoly in an area, forcing customers to upgrade at their expense is not fair.

Lovely attitude...typically AT&T arrogance, however many may switch to Cable or 3rd party DSL.

Yeah, nothing about this seems that unreasonable. Don't know how people can complain about ISPs not upgrading their network, then complain when they actually do. Can't blame AT&T for not wanting to pay to maintain both networks, once they have U-verse service in an area there's not much reason to keep offering plain old DSL.

Go right ahead. Please. I'm begging you, please go to another provider.

I'm not making any money on you and I'm actually losing it.

If I was still on AT&T's DSL service, I'd welcome it. I switched to Comcast because U-Verse wasn't available yet.

AT&T made 8 billion on wire line services in 2010 and $20 billion overall profit. You are making money and lots of it. Please stop lying.

All land and wireless service providers rape us here. Look at other countries and it's easy to see these greedy as F companies could care less about us and just rape us for everything. For being one of the top first world countries, our land/wireless internet providers are raping us the most compared to the others it's really sad and just look at his responses, you can tell he doesn't give a F because he's as greedy as they are. His thinking is the way all those companies think, out to screw us for every last time and try to use that same excuse of people using a lot of bandwidth so they have to screw everyone else even when we know it costs them hardly anything and they aren't losing any money.

I don't get it, how can you force something that's not a necessity on someone? Title should read AT&T's giving people who currently have DSL the option to upgrade to U-Verse. I'm pretty sure if you don't want to upgrade AT&T will be fine with not giving you any service.

That really isn't analogous. You aren't paying Ford for a service, you purchased a product. DSL is going away, this is AT&T moving on. DSL customers should too.
