Default How much more in taxes the US would get if prostitution is legalized?

Thinking about this today (no, not the prostitution, well... maybe a little) seeing that California is turning to legalize online gambling for tax revenue, I thought what the hell - why can't we legalize prostitution, marijuana and elect Charlie Sheen as Governor?

they tried that in New Zealand... turns out the sex trade ended up being controlled by the triads that ran the brothels and never paid any taxes to the government. while prostitution in and of itself i have no problem with, it will undoubtedly bring a host of other problems to the table... probably more than what it's worth from a financial standpoint.

Prostitution should be legal, like drugs. It's your business.

How about we just stop handing out billions to foreign governments, subsidizing oil companies & farmers, stop rewarding people to not work and we won't have to worry about prostitutes?

When it's illegal it's controlled by criminals anyway. But then all prostitutes are working illegally and are therefor not likely to complain about stuff and are more likely to be forced to do stuff they don't want to do.
By making it legal you'll have a group working legally, who can then help you with information without risking being arrested for prostitution themselves.
You give them rights, regular working benefits, protection against criminals, and they pay taxes. Just like the rest of the working population.

If the government doesn't check for illegal employees and for licenses and stuff then yes, the criminal organizations will still control it. By hunting those criminals and making sure that prostitutes (both legal and illegal!) have rights you can take down the organizations much more efficient than by hunting down prostitutes. They're not going to tell on the organizations that 'own' them if the only option they get is being locked up or deported by the government.

if it's illegal prostitution is there anyway and is fully under control of criminals.
Here it's legal and you need a license to open a brothel.
Of course they do it in other places too, but you have more control and you know where to go, and it keeps some of the prostitution legal, while also granting at least some protection to the workers. I mean, the police comes and check the bar once in a while to make sure you respect the license terms.
Prostitutes are also incouraged to register in the police's registry to legalize their activity.
The illegals don't do that and it will always be infiltrated by not-so-nice people, but it's better than nothing.

and anyway it's not like it's immoral or anything, so why forbid it in the first place. Christian bullshit? the US are the biggest porn producer, and that's legal even if you pay for sex + record it on tape and sell it. Really, there isn't any reason.

In the places where prostitution is legal (rural Nevada counties that authorize it) it is not taxed so FYI making something legal != increasing tax revenue.

Yep. Honestly, the potential benefits to public health and reduced enforcement costs alone probably make it worth it.

Um you fail..
even if all that was fixed.. guys would still go to hookers..

And just so you know.. (not talking about skanky disease ridden streetwalkers..) but call girls and other high end escorts all over the US and girls that work in Nevada in the brothels.. make more money than most of us.

we are talking 200k+ a year to fuck who they want..

and business is good..

Just ask Charlie.. he spends a fortune on super high end call girls..

I believe the right to have sex is a human right, and the government should create a national sex care agency to provide us this very basic human right.
