Default How do cell phone unlock companies actually get the unlock code?

I've always wondered (and can never find the answer with Google) how those unlock companies work. Even the wikipedia page doesn't explain it. How do these guys get the unlock code with the IMEI number off your phone? These days it's cheaper to just pay the $5-10 to get it unlocked but I've always wondered how these companies get the unlock code.

Anyone?

Well, they use a key generator, but I know there's one company that sends you the keygen itself, but you need a login and password to use it. It's possible other companies and the carriers have a web-based one or app.
