Cazadores is a bit cheaper and good stuff. I love Cabo Wabo as well. It's still in the $30-$35 range though.

Cazadores is definitely good bang for the buck.. It's what the Mexicans buy here in FL (friend is an ABC manager). I also like Sauza Hornitos for under $30 tequila.

Chill some Sauza Hornitos and shoot it.. and it's just as smooth as Patron.

50$ for 750mL isn't too bad... Sauza tres generaciones silver is pretty good for 10$ less.

lol, that's exactly why I drink Cazadores. I was in a liquore store a long time ago and the guy who worked there said "get Cazadores, it's what all the mexicans drink who buy here, so it can't be that bad". I've been drinking it since then!

Don Julio Blanco - Even at the same price "The Don" wins by providing more bang for your buck. It is just plain better than Patron Silver.

You might as well buy plastic bottle tequila if you don't want to pay $50.

Patron is about the cheapest you can get for a decent tequila.

If you are going to mix it, well then just get whatever. Just don't go too strong on the tequila because anything cheaper will taste like crap.

Quick Tequila lesson:

Gold tequila is made gold with food coloring. Tequila that does not say 100% Agave on he bottle is 51% Agave and 49% grain alcohol. This covers pretty much every tequila under $20. Stuff is bad and is not well filtered - will leave you with bad hang-overs.

Silver/Blanco is unaged tequila
Resposado is aged in oak barrels for up to 1yr and generally 90 days or more
Anejo is aged in oak barrels longer than 1yr

Recommendations:
$35 Don Julio Silver - better than Patron at a $10 Savings and a great "shooter" tequila.

Under $25
Sauza Hornitos - One of the cheapest 100% agave tequilas and great in margaritas
Cuervo Tradicional - Cheap 100% Agave tequila and great in mixed drinks
El Jimador - Best selling 100% agave tequila in Mexico. Very well rounded and usually cheaper than any other 100% Agave tequila
1800 - Another 100% Agave great for mixed drinks

$30 - $40
Don Eduardo
Herradura

This thread was over in the first three posts.

Go get some Cazadores.

If you want to make margaritas or another mixed drink get Blanco. If you want to sip with a lime wedge or something get the Reposado or Anejo.

1800 is fine for margaritas and such as well but I've found is usually the same price as Cazadores and Cazadores is much better.

Really anything 100% Agave will be fine if you wanna be cheap and are mixing.

Nothing wrong with Patron but nothing special either. You are paying for the name and marketing.

I agree with this statement, if you gonna mix buy cheap.

BTW, Numenorean, have you ever tried Casa Noble Resposado/Anejo? Find that stuff excellent sipping tequila, no salt or lime needed.

No, because he obviously actually knows what he is talking about. There's three situations for tequila:

1) You are going to shoot it. In this case, who cares you are just trying to get more alcohol into you. Get Cuervo.

2) You are going to mix it. In this case you are either really tasting the tequila or barely tasting it (depending on how you make a drink). Therefore you either go cuervo or high-end.

3) You are going to sip it. You need to get Don Julio Anejo (my personal fav) or similar.

The Blanco. I actually have 1800 silver for mixing. You can't tell that much difference in mixed drinks but it's definitely higher quality and prevents a bad hangover if you have a few margaritas.

For cheap mixing tequila I will use Sauza Hornitos, El Jimador, or 1800 Silver. They all have a bit more "bite" then the more expensive stuff, but hell I'm mixing it so the "bite" is nice . All of these should be <$30.

For drinking tequila (shots, on the rocks, etc), I move up to the $40-$60/bottle range. Cazadores is one of my favorite bottles (can't tell you how easy it is to chill it and finish it in a night with a buddy and no hangover the next day). It's ~$40, anejo so it's smoother then repasado and blanco. El Jimador is another good one, but I haven't gotten a bottle yet (it's one of the next new bottles I get though).

If you're spending the $50 on the crap they they call Patron, then you need to just add $10 and get the Don Julio anejo. For $60, it's one of the best tequilas I have ever had straight. It's not a mixing tequila, but damn is it smooth for shots.
