XGL and Compiz work with ATi now. At least, more than they did a month ago, IIRC.

It still doesn't work on my inspiron 5150 which has an mobility radeon 9000. But it works on my desktop with a 7800GT.

XGL works with ATI with minor problems. My friend has it (Radeon 9800 PRO). The only problem he has is that it freezes when he logs off. Starting multiple sessions is also bugged out, but these are non-standard scenarios. ATI users get AIGLX (more a Xorg extension) and NVIDIA still doesn't have support for that. Run compiz under AIGLX.
