Thieves manipulate pumps to steal gas
By LYDA LONGA
Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH -- With gas prices creeping up to the dreaded $4-a-gallon mark, crooks have gotten creative at a handful of gas stations in Daytona Beach and at least one in Ormond Beach, police said Thursday.

According to Daytona Beach Sgt. Billy Rhodes, fuel thieves have caused gasoline to flow freely, literally, from pumps by somehow jimmying the electronic device inside the machines.

"You have to go inside the store and get the gas pump energized first," Rhodes said. "The person in this case apparently asked for a very small amount of gas -- like $5."

Well-hidden from the gas station cashier's view because he selected a remote pump, the suspect somehow opened the machine and began working on the electronic hardware inside as the fuel filled his gas tank.

"That will freeze the amount of gas that shows on the pump, but the gas keeps flowing," Rhodes said.

The ending was anticlimactic. I was looking around for the continuation, but there isn't any!

There was a story the other day on the local news about a guy who went into a gas station pulling a large trailer, parked so the trailer was over top of the openings where they fill the tanks, then used a trap door in the bottom of the trailer to siphon thousands of dollars worth of fuel into a storage tank hidden in the trailer. Low-tech but effective.

This is honestly the only reason why I don't cheer these hackers on. It's all fun and games until the problem hits you at home.

I was looking for the how-to
1. choose remote pump
2. pay small amt for gas
3. open panel and "jimmy" the electronics
4. free gas!

There you go.

My last few fills have averaged $90. I'd walk or ride before I went to jail though.

Does you car require a mid grade? (high compression)? if not you could save a few
by just running regular..

That was pretty horrible. Sounds like something not many people would be able to get away with.
